A gentle reminder for anyone working with children, teens, or adults around horses:

Dysregulation does not always look dramatic. 🐴

It is not always:
• shouting
• crying
• aggression
• visible panic

Sometimes it looks like:

⚡ over-talking constantly because silence feels unsafe

⚡ laughing through everything

⚡ rushing tasks and movements

⚡ repeatedly apologising

⚡ asking “am I doing it right?” every thirty seconds

⚡ freezing when given choice

⚡ becoming overly compliant

⚡ watching your face for signs they’ve got something wrong

⚡ panicking over tiny mistakes

⚡ struggling to make decisions

⚡ trying to care for everyone else instead of themselves

⚡ shutting down emotionally while still physically participating

⚡ saying “I’m fine” while their entire body says otherwise

And honestly?

Horses often notice these shifts before humans do.

You might see:
🐴 the horse moving away slightly
🐴 increased tension
🐴 difficulty connecting
🐴 sudden stillness
🐴 pushiness
🐴 hyper-alert behaviour
🐴 disengagement

Not because the person is “bad” or “too much”.

But because nervous systems communicate constantly.

Sometimes the young person who looks the calmest is actually working the hardest internally just to stay regulated enough to remain in the session.

That is why trauma-informed practice matters.

Not so we can label every behaviour.
Not so we become frightened of emotional responses.

But so we stay curious instead of judgemental.

A child rushing a grooming task does not need "correcting" first.

They may need help feeling safe enough to slow down.

A teen who constantly says “sorry” does not need "behaviour management"

They need a relationship where mistakes do not feel dangerous.

The work is not in controlling the behaviour.

Sometimes the work is helping a nervous system realise:

“You are still safe here even if you get something wrong.” 🌿

Resilience is a mindset so baked into the horse person identity that we rarely take a moment to even consider it, but it is something we all share with each other🐴💪

A recent study has found that horse riding and care develops resilience, responsibility, and leadership, which are highly transferrable to the non-horse world...

This day was a pivotal moment in my life.

I'll try to keep this post somewhat short, but trust me it's worth the read!

I had been working in the electrical union out of London. I was working 10 hour days, commuting 2 hours a day, taking care of my own horses/farm before/after work and on the weekends. At this particular time I had also just finished taking care of my neighbours horses for two weeks while they went on vacation. I was exhausted, I was stuck in a concrete building all day, not seeing the sun, not spending enough time outside/with my horses (other than caring for them which I do enjoy, but it's not the same as spending quality time with them). I left home in the dark and I got home in the dark.

This particular day I took off work to help a dear friend of mine that I met in college with her program. She was doing a women's retreat with indigenous women and girls who were involved in human trafficking. We had done this twice before this day, and this was the first time we were doing it again after covid (this was March 2022). I, along with another long time friend, would trailer the horses to the large country property they would rent for the week, teach the women about horses and how trauma can affect horses as well, and then we would do some grooming and riding afterwards. They always love the horses, and I loved sharing them.

We got there early on this beautiful March day, which ended up being the best thing that could have happened. I took the horses off the trailer and they both immediately rolled in the snow. For anyone who knows horses, they don't lie down and roll unless they are very comfortable. It seriously surprised me. Then the owner of this property took us for a little tour and I started to feel it too.... the energy of this property was amazing, I had never felt anything like it. Horses don't lie either, so I know they felt it too as soon as they walked off the trailer, and this is why they rolled.

The owner of this property also runs retreats, meditation, and yoga. She took us into her newly built yoga studio that had windows floor to ceiling, the sun was shining and it felt so nice. I said to her "Wow, this is exactly what I needed." and she invited my friend and I in for a quick meditation session. As soon as I sat down on the yoga mat I just started crying. She took us through the meditation and I continued to cry. At the end, she gave us cards (I'm unsure of exactly what kind of cards they were) and mine said "Slow down. Spend time in nature." Cue more tears. I also just got goosebumps as I typed that. It hit me so hard. I realized how unhappy I was doing what I was doing. I was working so much and so hard and not getting to enjoy the amazing animals I have in my backyard, and the spectacular property that my mom and I worked so hard to get and continued to work so hard to make our own.

I had a long conversation with my friend before we started and she said she would love to work with me more going forward. This is when the wheels really started turning for me to combine two things I'm very passionate about: helping people, and sharing the amazing healing powers of horses.

The rest of the day went very well. The girls all shared their experiences of how this retreat had affected them thus far too. We did our presentation, interacted with the horses, and the feedback was all positive.

I'm a very strong believer in everything happens for a reason. I needed this day just as much as all the women and girls I was there for. We all ended up at this property, with the amazing owners for a reason.

A quick note about the first picture! This was taken by the owner of the property. On my iPhone, it's a live photo and it's so cool to see this ring around the two horses in motion. It was taken inside the trailer, so it was in the shade. She explained it as their energy ring, and how the two of them were connected within it. Skeptics I'm sure will have another explanation for it, but I really believe what she said, and the more I learned about their electromagnetic field, the more I believe it.

These horses are a gift, and I am so lucky to be in their presence everyday. My goal is to share them with as many people as I can.

If you made it this far, thank you so much for reading this. This day really was life changing for me, and I'm glad I was able to share it with you.
