On September 30, Nova Scotia SPCA Thrift Stores will honour National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – a day that honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.
Our Nova Scotia SPCA Thrift Stores are committed to the Calls to Action in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. The Commission had 94 calls to action covering everything from education to child welfare to the law and more. It is our responsibility as Treaty People to first learn about the Calls to Action and then implement them in our day-to-day lives. We are committed to Calls to Action #6 - #12 and #92.
These Calls to Action are placed in our facilities across the province, and all staff and volunteers are encouraged to read them, ask questions, and commit to implementing them daily.
We also recognize that October 1 is Treaty Day and marks the beginning of Mi’kmaw History Month. This year’s theme is “𝘕𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪’𝘬 — 𝘞𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨,” inviting people across Mi’kma’kik to reflect on healing as a lifelong journey. October 4 is also the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls & Gender Diverse People. The National Association of Friendship Centers has a list of resources to get you started at https://nafc.ca/?lang=en.
