June is National Microchip month.
If your pet is ever separated from you–by wandering off, getting lost in a natural disaster or becoming the victim of dognapping–a microchip can help you get your pet home. If your pet should wind up in a full shelter, that microchip can save their life.
Microchipping is so important for identifying lost pets during times of disaster when collars may be lost and families may be separated. It’s fairly inexpensive.
The microchipping procedure is safe and simple and only takes a few minutes. The vet will first scan your pet with a reader to make sure they aren't already chipped, and then read the microchip in the package to verify that it functions.
Next, the tiny microchip (think size of a grain of rice) is inserted with a syringe, not unlike giving an animal his shots. The microchip is read again to ensure it still works properly.
Finally, the vet completes the paperwork and enrolls your pet in the online database.
The microchip contains your pet’s unique identification number so if your pet should become lost, vets and public authorities such as animal control can read the microchip with any scanner, and follow the link of the animal ID number to online pet databases to trace a lost or stolen animal and return it to its rightful owner.

Chubz was in today to have a dental and Kayla was giving her extra love while waking up. Chubz was sticking her tongue out and not showing her appreciation. 😜

It's veterinary assistant appreciation week.
We honestly could not function as well at our clinic without our veterinary assistant’s help daily. We truly appreciate you. ❤️
Abby is known for jump scaring her coworkers because she is so quiet around the clinic. Her favourite thing about being a vet assistant is helping care for the animals. Abby has been with Celtic Creatures for 1 year.
Robin is known for being the one to tidy up around the clinic. Her favourite thing about working at Celtic Creatures is her coworkers. Robin worked with us for a brief time in 2015 and has returned to us in November 2025.
Bonnie has been with our clinic for 18 years. She is known for being organized, prepared and being 10 steps ahead. Her favourite part about being a vet assistant is watching pets grow up over the years.
Landon has been with our clinic for 3 years and she is known as our go to person for referrals and microscope slides. Her favourite thing about being a vet assistant is seeing cats (even the spicey ones) and that every day is different.

With warmer weather brings great opportunities to spend time outside, but with that comes all of the pests as well. Have you seen blotches on your pet, usually on the belly and inner thighs, after spending time outside. See the attached pictures.

A common question is: “What causes this?” If you guessed black flies, then you are correct. Black fly season brings this unavoidable nuisance and they may not only find you a tasty feast, but also your pet.

Black flies most favorite area to chow down is on a pet’s underbelly and in their groin region. The welts leftover from the bites are usually quite distinctive: a bright red circle about the size of a nickel found most commonly on areas where hair is thinner. They can also be found on the inside of ears in pets whose ears stand up straight.

The good news is that, despite these welts looking very angry and sore; pets do not seem to mind them. They generally disappear on their own over time. However, some pets can be more sensitive to these bites than others and can develop a skin infection or inflammation. Signs of this may include itching, scratching, licking and redness of the skin.

The best way to manage fly bites is prevention. Black flies are more common around compost heaps, garbage, and streams. Keeping your pet away from these areas and inside the house during peak bug times will reduce the risk of obtaining a bite. If your pet is an unlucky meal of black flies and the welts are extensive, excessive itching is present, or you want to confirm that you are dealing with a black fly bite, please give us a call to book an appointment.
