National Pet Memorial Day 13 Sept 26

SPIRITED
By Luan Egan

Mackie visited me in the wee morning hours.

At first I was sad, thinking about the last two days of her life,

and how she went downhill so fast.

The grief and helplessness I felt.

How much I missed her.

Her soft coat, her kind eyes, her willingness to please.

Then I realized that this sadness was not what I wanted to share with her at this special moment;

I wanted to share the good memories.

Mackie, do you remember the sheep?

Mackie, do you remember running in Monarch Park?

Mackie, do you remember hazing Geese?

Mackie, do you remember chasing airplanes?

Mackie, do you remember the waves at the beach?

Suddenly, she was gone.

And I knew exactly where.

I knew there was a joyful ghost dog running in the moonlight

Along the shores of Lake Ontario, at the foot of Glen Manor Drive.

With a stick clenched between her teeth,

Herding the waves.
