We rescue and care for exotic animals and educate the public about all animals of all kinds. We are about caring for animals of all kinds and all animal families - insects, fish, birds, arachnids, arthropods, amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals. We take these amazing creatures in when they are unwanted, we rescue them when the RCMP or the Department of Fish & Wildli

fe call us. care, the specialized food they need, the right kind of shelter, and stimulus. We care for them for the rest of their natural lives - some of our animals live over 100 years. We teach thousands of kids and adults each year about animals and the natural world. We do this in schools of all levels, libraries, festivals, daycares, senior homes, private homes etc. We also provide a wide variety of learning experiences at our rescue facility with tours of our animals, Nature Clubs for kids, Junior Zoo Keeping courses for teens, Adult Career Training courses, Summer Camps, Spring Break Camps, and volunteer opportunities for teens and adults. We give back to the community by supporting organizations such as BC Children's Hospital, Variety Club, Canuck Place and more. We take our animals to these kids who need an adventure, some stimulus, a chance to learn about animals of all kinds. We do this for kids in need and we do it for the warmth it adds to our lives. We do all these things with the help of dedicated volunteers, knowledgeable and experienced staff and our dedicated Board of Directors - and we do it every day of the year.

Urban Safari Rescue is hiring!! Please email your resume and cover letter to [email protected] by Sept. 18. This is a full time - 35 hours per week position.
We are looking for a special person. This person has excellent public speaking skills and relates to children well and enjoys working with them. This person has an N or class 5 drivers license and clean driving record. We may ask for proof. This person has their own transport to get to work, we are not on any bus or transit lines. This person has knowledge of or has worked with exotic animals ( not dogs, cats or horses - those are not the animals we care for ). This person is physically fit and can lift aprox. 50 lbs. (or 23 kilos. ). This person is mature in their outlook, has a good work ethic, has visited our website and knows what we are about and believes in our mission. Is this person - you? Let us know. Attention all Urban Safari Rescue Society members! We are holding our AGM at 4pm. on Sunday Sept. 20. via zoom. As a member you are entitled to join us for the meeting. The AGM is one of the most important events in the life of any registered charity. It is when we recap what has happened in the past year and set out the plan for the coming year. It is when we discuss the budget and other financial information. It is also when we elect a new Board of Directors. If you are a member you come vote for candidates for the Board and/or become a Board member yourself. If you are interested in joining our Board of Directors please email the office and we will go from there. If you want to join the AGM meeting email the office and we will make it happen.

Meet Bright Eyes, the Sugar Glider, enjoying a yummy grape. If you have had us come do a presentation at your school, daycare, home you may have met Bright Eyes already. Sugar Gliders were a popular pet for a few years until people realized that they are not a beginner pet. They are actually challenging to keep for several reasons:
They are nocturnal - so they are sleeping when you want to interact with them and awake making crazy noises while you want to sleep
They eat a combination of fruits, insects and worms and tree sap. So they attract insects into your home. They can also get fleas.
They are not all friendly. Some can be down right nasty and will bite. Although the bite is not serious it can be very scary for a child.
They are prone to diabetes and their diet must be carefully watched. They are also prone to eye problems, tumors and other health issues.
They are a species that need to have others of its kind around, so they need to be in at least pairs and more is better. This will become a financial burden for the pet owner.
In short we do not recommend these little guys as pets. They are super cute but can be a super headache.

Meet Shelly the Hermit Crab! Hermit Crabs have adapted to occupy empty scavenged shells from other dead sea creatures and they will migrate to larger shells as the Hermit crab grows. Land hermit crabs live close to the shoreline and must have access to both land and water. They are popular pets but do not breed in human care. Consequently, the pet trade harvests them from the wild, which is unsustainable. So Hermit Crabs that are for sale in pet stores and other places as pets have been collected from their wild environment to be sold as pets. Many different species of land hermit crabs live in tropical areas of the Indo-Pacific region, the western Atlantic and the western Caribbean. We have several Hermit Crabs at Urban Safari Rescue that were surrendered from former pet owners. Don't buy them as pets, come see them at Urban Safari Rescue instead.

Meet Banana, the Ball Python! Banana is curious , like most animals, and is checking me out with his forked tongue. Ball Pythons are native to the grass and shrub lands of Central and Western Africa and is the smallest of the African pythons. Banana is a yellow colour because it was bred to be yellow. It is called a morph. You would never is a Ball Python this colour in their wild environment because it would be too visible to predators.

West Coast Gluten Free will be at the White Rock farmers market on Sunday Aug. 23 from 10am to 2pm. selling delicious fresh made cookies as a fund raiser for Urban Safari. Meet Nassi, the Gargoyle Gecko. These little geckos are native to New Caledonia in the south Pacific and can live up to 20 years. These geckos are larger than the Crested gecko and features a stone like pattern so when they are sitting still as they do during the day they look like Gargoyles perched on a church. Gargoyle geckos are nocturnal, which means they are more active at night. They are also omnivores, which means they eat meat and vegetable matter - like humans. They eat insects, worms and other small critters along with some fruit and soft vegetation. In their wild environment of New Caledonia their habitat is under pressure from deforestation.

Such generous and hard working kids! Birthday girl Nora was having her birthday party at Urban Safari. Along with her good friend Angela they decided to raise some money for the animals at our rescue. They had a lemonade stand and raise $60 !! and then donated it to Urban Safari Rescue. Thank you girls for caring so much about the animals that you invested your time and effort to help them. Well done!
