Very interesting study around historical inbreeding of baroque horses

Very interesting study around historical inbreeding of baroque horses

Recent genomic research is providing new insight into the genetic factors that influence long-term health, population sustainability, and responsible breeding in Baroque horse breeds.

A study of 1,160 horses from 15 Baroque populations used more than 34,000 genetic markers to assess genetic diversity, genomic inbreeding, effective population size, population structure, historical admixture, and recent gene flow.

The study identified two broad historical bottlenecks in genetic diversity. The first occurred approximately 19 to 24 generations ago, corresponding roughly to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

This pattern was particularly evident in several Lipizzan populations, Friesians, Lusitanos, and Cartujanos.

The second occurred approximately 8 to 13 generations ago, corresponding broadly to the period from the late nineteenth century through the aftermath of the World Wars.

This later decline affected Kladrubys and several Iberian and South American populations.

The findings showed genomic inbreeding in every population, but the levels varied considerably.

Criollo and Peruvian Paso horses had the lowest genomic inbreeding estimates and relatively high measures of genetic diversity.

Lusitanos and the broader Pura Raza Española population also showed comparatively favourable results.

By contrast, the Friesian sample had the lowest heterozygosity and haplotype richness, together with the highest genomic inbreeding in the study.

The Carthusian strain of the Pura Raza Española also showed a higher level of genomic inbreeding than the broader PRE population.

These findings do not mean that every Friesian or Carthusian horse will experience health problems, but they do indicate a greater population-level risk associated with reduced genetic variation and recent common ancestry.

For individual horses, a favourable genetic profile would generally include lower individual genomic inbreeding, fewer long runs of homozygosity, limited relatedness to a proposed mate, and negative results for known inherited conditions.

Genetics however, also interact with nutrition, management, infection, injury, conformation, workload, and environmental conditions.

🇬🇧Lusitano once again ranks among the world’s top five breeds in Dressage

For the second time, the Lusitano has reached 5th place in the WBFSH world ranking of breeds for Dressage, a discipline traditionally dominated by Europe’s most prestigious studbooks.

Gladiador do Lis, Marques dos Cedros, Lírio, Irão, Jairo de Além and Come Back de Massa were key to this result.

It reflects generations of work by breeders, owners, riders, trainers and foreign Associations. Our Studbook remains closed, with no outside bloodlines.

Great reminder of study originally conducted in 1938

🐴 In 1938 two Cambridge scientists put a Shire stallion to Shetland mares, and a Shetland stallion to Shire mares, and settled an argument that had run for centuries.

A. Walton and John Hammond used artificial insemination to make the crosses in both directions, and published what happened in Proceedings of the Royal Society B in 1938. Genetically, both sets of foals were exactly the same cross — the same two breeds, the same mix, in the same proportions. The only difference was which mare carried which foal.

The foals carried by the Shire mares were born about three times the size of the foals carried by the Shetland mares.

And it was not a temporary head start that evened out with time. The gap was still there when those foals were three years old.

It remains the classic demonstration that the dam's uterus — not the genes alone — decides how big a foal arrives in the world. A mare doesn't simply deliver what she was given. She sets the size of the room her foal grows in, and that room shapes the horse for years afterwards.

Every breeder who has watched a small mare safely carry a big stallion's foal has that 1938 experiment standing behind them, whether they know it or not.

Does that change how you'd think about choosing a mare?
