As temperatures start to drop, you may be wondering how long your dog should spend outdoors. The answer depends on factors like their size, coat type, and age. Keep an eye out for signs they're getting too cold, such as slowing down, shivering, or lifting their paws. When you notice these cues, it's time to head inside and warm up.

On February 5th, 2026, the PEI Humane Society’s Animal Protection Officers seized 43 dogs under the Prince Edward Island Animal Welfare Act. The investigation is ongoing, so we are unable to answer questions related to either the case, or the animals at this time.

We ask for the public’s patience and understanding as we work through this large intake of animals. Please know this could slow down or otherwise impact shelter operations.

Keeping your dog at a healthy weight isn’t about looks — it’s about quality of life. 🐾
A dog at a healthy body condition is more likely to move comfortably, avoid joint pain, and reduce their risk of serious health issues like diabetes and heart disease. Knowing how to check your dog’s body condition helps you catch small changes before they become big problems — and keeps tails wagging longer.

Take a look at the chart and see where your dog falls. When in doubt, your vet can help you make a plan that works for your pup.
