Meet Maggie! See Maggie Chill. See Maggie Run (13.6 km in a day)! See Maggie's feet after she was all over the fields and the beach 😧 Ouch! Even though Old Home Week has ended, we know there are still a LOT of beach days left and that means a few more cut paw pads.

So what do you do if your pup slices a paw pad (or two, or four 🫠)?

First thing to do is to clean the affected paw(s) gently with warm, soapy water to remove any sand, dirt, or debris. Make sure there are no pieces of shell, glass, or other foreign material stuck in the wound. (If there is a piece that is stuck firmly or deeply, do not attempt to remove it and contact your veterinarian ASAP for further guidance.)

If there is bleeding, apply pressure with a clean cloth for 5-10 minutes. It is not abnormal for there to be a small amount of bleeding that reoccurs as your pet walks on the paw. If the bleeding soaks through your cloth or persists beyond 15 minutes of applied pressure please contact your veterinarian ASAP.

A light non-stick pad can be applied on the affected paw and then a light wrap used to keep it in place (check that you can put 2 fingers under the wrap to ensure it isn't too tight) for comfort and protection. Paw pads are notoriously difficult to close due to the callus tissue and the fact that they are always in use. This means unless they are exceptionally deep they are often left to heal on their own (which may take 3-4 weeks).

Keep your pup from licking the wound, check and change the bandage daily and consider a daily salt water soak. Contact your vet if the wound becomes swollen, has discharge, or you have any concerns about the healing process.

Does your dog have a favourite beach to visit? We'd love to see photos!

Did you know that our Dr. Grace Done has a special interest in ophthalmology?

Constance came to Dr. Done to get her ocular pressures checked. Her pressures have been consistent lately, which is fantastic 🥳

Huge appreciation post to our neighbors, MNP Stratford, for sharing their cart scoops with our team! As you may notice, Dr. Duerr was very impatient to get at her raspberry lemon sorbet 😋 Small business support all around for the win!
