Several weeks after the initial trauma this nose wound would close over and look great! Then a small draining tract would open up again. On exploration we removed several small pieces of sequestrum.
A sequestrum is a piece of bone that loses its blood supply following the initial trauma. The classic case is the wound that will heal or nearly heal, but end up opening up again. Usually several weeks after the initial trauma the sequestrum separates from the surrounding healthy bone. Because the body recognizes the dead bone as a “foreign object,” the wound cannot heal properly until it is removed.
Now that these pieces have been removed, this guy should heal up nicely!

An ongoing study by Dr Renaud! He is the respiratory guru and was one of my professors in school way back in the day. If I have ever done a bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) for you - he’s the one they get sent to/read by.

Yesterday I was surprised with a celebratory dinner, friends and a book of kind words and stories from so many clients to celebrate the first 6 months of GEVS. I am grateful, thankful and beyond humbled for your support. My goal in creating GEVS was to support the people who have supported me throughout my career and I am honored to do that everyday for you and your horses. Veterinary medicine can be a challenging career at times and perhaps what hits me the deepest is that you see me not only as a veterinarian but as a person. I truly have the best clients and the best friends. Thank you ❤️🦄🙏🏻
