Did you know? πŸ‘€

A mild inflammatory response after breeding is actually a normal part of the mare’s reproductive process.

After breeding, the uterus naturally works to clear excess fluid, bacteria, and debris. Most mares manage this efficiently on their own within a short period of time. But sometimes, inflammation lingers longer than it should.

πŸ“£ When does it become a concern? πŸ“£
We monitor your mare for:
β€’ Excess uterine fluid
β€’ Delayed uterine clearance
β€’ Persistent inflammation
β€’ Signs the uterus isn’t returning to normal after breeding

Mares that retain fluid or experience prolonged inflammation may have a harder time establishing a pregnancy if it isn’t addressed early.

✨ What can help? ✨
Depending on the mare, we might recommend:
β€’ Follow-up ultrasounds
β€’ Uterine flushing
β€’ Medications to support clearance and reduce inflammation
β€’ Adjustments to breeding management

Every mare responds differently, which is why close monitoring after breeding can play such an important role in reproductive success!

Back pain in horses is more complex than just β€œa sore back.” Often, discomfort develops because a horse has been compensating elsewhere in the body for weeks, months, or even years.

A recent case in clinic involved a horse with significant back soreness and muscle tension secondary to compensation from underlying lameness issues in multiple limbs. When horses move or stand abnormally to avoid discomfort, it can place excessive strain on supporting muscles and create a frustrating cycle of pain, tension, and poor posture.

After a throughout lameness exam, Dr. Marthe addressed the lameness in the limbs, but also recommended mesotherapy as part of this horse’s treatment plan to help interrupt that pain cycle, reduce muscle soreness, and encourage a more natural, comfortable posture. By relieving some of the discomfort in the back and supporting muscles, we can help horses move more freely and support the body’s healing process.

Mesotherapy involves a series of very small injections placed just under the skin in the affected area. These injections work by stimulating nerve pathways and helping β€œinterrupt” pain signals, which can reduce muscle tension and improve comfort.
