Barn Wednesday | Excella Legacy Series | The Evolution of Excella (2018–Today)

After nearly five decades of change, challenges, and growth, the Excella story has continued to evolve.

What began with a passion for horses and a vision for exceptional horsemanship has grown into something much bigger, one that looks toward the future while staying connected to the foundation built along the way.

The return to Stony Plain in 2018 marked the beginning of a new chapter. From there, the vision for Excella continued to take shape, bringing together the ideas of horsemanship, education, training, breeding, and a community built around the equestrian lifestyle.

Today, Excella stands at the intersection of its history and its future. The journey that began nearly 50 years ago continues to influence the direction of what comes next.

From the early days, through periods of change and transition, to the vision taking shape today, every chapter has played a part in shaping Excella.

And this chapter is far from over. 🐴

Barn Wednesday | Excella Legacy Series | Challenges & Transitions (1991–2018)

Not every chapter in a legacy follows a straight path.
The years following 1991 brought significant change to Excella. As Lisa faced serious health challenges that affected her ability to continue training horses, the operation transitioned to a more private structure while the breeding program and care of the existing herd continued.

Following surgery and recovery in 2000, Lisa gradually returned to involvement with horses. By the early 2000s, she was again working with staff to re-establish aspects of the training program and offering lessons to selected students.

In 2003, Excella’s breeding operations relocated to Terracana Ranch Resort near Valemount, British Columbia. For the next 15 years, horses continued to be raised and developed at Terracana Ranch.
In 2018, the Excella horses returned to Stony Plain, Alberta, marking the beginning of a renewed focus on the future direction of the program.

Through a period of significant change, the Excella journey continued.

🐴 Meet the Horse Monday | Figaro PASB Stats Edition

This week we’re looking back at the legendary Figaro PASB, one of the most accomplished racehorses in Arabian racing history.

🏆 Career Highlights

• 32 career starts with 12 wins, 10 seconds, and 4 thirds

• Winner of 9 stakes races in Poland

• Set 4 track records from 1,600 to 3,000 meters

• Recognized as one of the Top Five Arabian racehorses of his era

• The only horse to defeat the legendary mare Orgia

• Retired sound after an exceptional racing career, with a stakes race in Poland later named in his honor.

Beyond his success on the track, Figaro PASB left a lasting impact through his offspring, whose racing achievements helped extend his legacy across Europe and North America.

Figaro’s story is an important part of Excella’s history and a reminder of the remarkable bloodlines that continue to influence the Arabian horse today.

Barn Wednesday | Excella Legacy Series | Building Excella (1987–1991)

Every vision needs a place to grow.

After returning to Alberta in 1987, Lisa brought home years of knowledge and experience gained in California.
With that foundation, she began establishing Excella Arabians as a breeding, training, and marketing centre dedicated to the Arabian horse.

As the program expanded, so did the need for a permanent home. Together, Lisa and her father, Gerry Levasseur, built the Excella facility in Stony Plain, Alberta, creating a space designed to support every part of the program under one roof.

With room to grow, Excella continued its focus on breeding, training, showing, and developing horses, building on the foundation established during the Baywood years and strengthening its presence in Alberta.

By the early 1990s, Excella had entered a new chapter. But the years ahead would bring unexpected challenges that would reshape the program once again.

Barn Wednesday | Excella Legacy Series | The Baywood Years (1979–1987)

Some chapters are defined by time spent, and others by everything learned within them.

From 1979 to 1987, Lisa worked at Baywood Park Ltd in California, where she gained hands-on experience in the Arabian horse industry. During these years, she worked alongside Bob Battaglia and Randy Shockley, learning within a professional training environment while continuing to develop her skills and knowledge.
These years were also marked by competition success, with multiple Class A and regional wins throughout California and surrounding areas. At the same time, the Excella program saw its horses compete at the national level in both Canada and the United States, earning Top Ten placements, National Championships, and a Reserve National Championship across multiple disciplines.

By 1987, following the passing of Randy Shockley and the closure of Baywood Park, this chapter came to a close. Lisa returned to Alberta with years of experience gained and the foundation of the next chapter already taking shape.
