In conclusion of Veterinary Assistant Week, we would like to send a shout‑out to our incredible Kennel Attendant, Emelia!

Your role is essential — from keeping everything spotless to monitoring patient comfort, to lending a hand wherever it’s needed. The care and consistency you bring to our clinic help create a safe, calm environment for every animal who walks through our doors.

We’re grateful for your dedication and the heart you put into your work.

Happy Veterinary Assistant Week!

This week, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible work of our veterinary assistant Nicole, our dedicated Large Animal VA.

Nicole spends most of her days on the road with Dr. Neil, supporting farm calls, handling patients with skill and calm, and keeping our large‑animal days running smoothly. But what truly sets her apart is everything she does beyond the farm gate. When she’s not out on calls, Nicole jumps in wherever she’s needed — helping the team in‑clinic, providing patient care, preparing prescriptions, organizing equipment, pitching in with cleaning, and keeping our days bright with her trademark positivity.

Thank you, Nicole, for your hard work, your adaptability, and your commitment to our patients, clients, and team. We’re grateful for everything you do!

Most pet owners know that yearly heartworm prevention is important. Here in Manitoba it is recommended to protect dogs and cats from heartworm transmission for 6 months (June-November).

♥️🪱 But do you know how a heartworm infection is contracted and spread? 🦟

🎦 Please watch this informative video.

📝 It is important to note that any missed months of the heartworm preventative can result in your dog or cat developing heartworm disease. This is why an annual heartworm test is recommended.

Q: A common question we get asked is,
"Why start in June and not in May when mosquitos start to appear?"
Or,
"Won't it be sufficient to give the last heartworm preventative in October instead of November?"

A: The answer to these questions are the same. The monthly heartworm preventative that we use is retroactive. This means the medication kills the heartworm larvae that were transmitted by mosquitoes during the previous month. So the dose given on June 1st protects against infection that may have been transmitted by mosquitos in May. And that is why the last dose is given November 1st – to protect against infection that may have been transmitted by mosquitos in October.

Call us today at 204-467-2083 or visit our website at https://familyvets.ca/forms/prescription-refill-and-food-order-request-form/ to order your heartworm prevention so you can have it on hand and ready for June 1st.

Many of our clients may recall meeting our veterinary summer student, Ellen. Whether it was on calls with Dr. Neil, or taking appointments in the clinic, Ellen was always happy to lend a hand and experience as much as she could.

🌟 Happy Veterinary Receptionist Week! 🌟

This week, we celebrate the incredible team of veterinary receptionists who are the face of our clinic. They are the first friendly smiles our clients see, the calm voices on the phone, and the steady support behind every busy day.

📞 We’re Experiencing High Call Volumes

As we move through our busy season, our team is receiving a much higher number of calls than usual. We hear you, and we understand that this may cause delays or inconvenience.

During this time, you may need to try calling more than once to get through. If your concern is non‑urgent, we kindly ask that you leave us a voicemail or email us at [email protected] so we can respond as efficiently as possible.

👉 Please Note: Clients may also experience slightly longer wait times than usual in our lobby during this season, and we appreciate your patience as we continue to strive to provide you and your animals with the same high standard of care.

Thank you for your understanding and for trusting us with your animals. 🐾
