🦃 Thanksgiving Safety Tips for Pet Owners

Thanksgiving brings great food, cozy gatherings, and festive décor — but it also brings seasonal hazards that can put pets at risk. Here’s what to keep in mind to keep your animals safe this holiday.

🍽️ Food Hazards to Watch For
Many classic Thanksgiving dishes aren’t pet‑friendly:
• Poultry bones (such as turkey or chicken) can splinter and cause choking or internal injury.
• Poultry skin, gravy, and fatty foods can trigger pancreatitis, a painful and potentially life‑threatening inflammation of the pancreas. Even small amounts of high‑fat foods can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy, and loss of appetite.
• Table scraps your pet’s stomach isn’t used to — even “safe” foods — can cause GI upset, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, gas, or discomfort.
• Onions, garlic, leeks, and chives (common in stuffing and sides) are toxic to pets.
• Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs.
• Chocolate and xylitol‑sweetened desserts/candy are highly toxic.
• Raw bread dough can expand in the stomach and produce alcohol, causing dangerous bloating.
Safe alternatives: Plain cooked poultry meat, carrots, green beans, or pumpkin — no seasoning, no skin, no bones.

🚪 Guests, Doors & Holiday Chaos
With people coming and going, pets may become stressed or slip out unnoticed.
• Increased noise and unfamiliar faces can cause anxiety.
• Open doors create opportunities for accidental escapes.

Tip: 👉 Set up a quiet room with their bed, water, and toys. Use gates or closed doors to prevent dashing.

🎁 Decor & Household Hazards
Holiday décor can be tempting — and risky.
• Lit candles can be knocked over.
• Electrical cords may be chewed.
• Festive plants like chrysanthemums, holly, and poinsettias can be toxic.

Tip: 👉 Choose flameless candles and keep décor out of reach.

🗑️ Trash Trouble
Poultry carcasses, bones, wrappers, and food scraps in the garbage are irresistible to pets. Tip: Use a secure, locking‑lid trash can and empty it frequently.

TODAY IS WORLD RABIES DAY

Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects the brain and nervous system of mammals, including pets, livestock, and humans. Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always deadly — but it’s 100% preventable through vaccination.
In Manitoba, the most common sources of rabies exposure are bats, skunks, foxes, and raccoons. Pets and farm animals can contract rabies through bites or saliva contact from infected wildlife.

✅ Vaccinate your pets and livestock — it’s the best protection.
✅ Avoid contact with wild animals, especially those acting unusually tame or aggressive.

❗ If exposure is suspected:
• Contact your veterinarian immediately for your animal.
• Seek medical attention right away for humans.
• Report the incident to Manitoba Public Health or Animal Services.

👉 Rabies is preventable — awareness and vaccination save lives.
