An urgent call to action to save Manitoba’s only black bear rescue! Please write to the RM of Rockwood Council (see contact info below) and please share.

Council approved a plan for a new quarry approximately 1/2 a mile from the bear rescue. It also recently approved a conceptual plan for the quarry’s haul/truck route to be built at the end of our driveway…only 400 feet from the bears!

This would mean that cubs like Winston, pictured the day he arrived at 2 weeks old, will have no safe haven.

Please write respectfully to the Reeve and councillors and ask them to reconsider their support for the new quarry development:

Councillor Curtis McClintock: [email protected]

Councillor Neal Wirgau: [email protected]

Councillor Lyle Willis: [email protected]

Edit; due to misinformation and some inflammatory comments I’ve had to delete, I’ve closed this post to new comments. It’s a factual post with a straight forward call to action. Thank you to all our supporters for speaking up on behalf of Manitoba’s orphaned black bear cubs!

The Balmoral triplets this summer. 💚

We all know them as (L -R) Big Sister, Little Sister, Little Brother but, being the “Y” cubs as we go down the alphabet…..they are actually Yolanda, Yalena and Yannick! Their names were chosen by Niagara Action for Animals, a wonderful animal advocacy charity based in St. Catharines, ON. NAfA has repeatedly and very generously supported us in making facility improvements to better help our cubs.

NAfA speaks up for farm animals, pets and wildlife as well as having adoptables, and have helped 100’s of animals in emergency distress situations. Please see their website for more info; https://niagaraactionforanimals.org/

Thank you Niagara Action for Animals! 👏

P.S. In memory of the cubs’ mother, she’ll be remembered as Yvette, another name that NAfA liked. It means yew tree, which was considered a protector or guardian in some cultures. Indeed Yvette did die guarding her cubs as she lay at the base of their tree which was hollow, a shelter for the cubs to hide in….their protecting tree.

We received another cub, this one from the Hadashville, MB area. She needed help after unfortunately stepping into a conibear trap set for beavers. Conservation officers captured her, removed the trap and determined she needed to come to us for medical aid.

After seeing our vet and being x-rayed we were relieved there were no broken bones in her foot, however there is a deep puncture wound which needs treatment. She’ll stay with us until she’s ready to return to the wild.

It’s a dangerous world out there for wildlife and we’re so glad this cub made it to safety.

We enjoyed a visit this summer from some of the team at Bridgwater Veterinary Hospital & Wellness Centre in Winnipeg.

They’re very supportive of our cubs (as you can see from their t-shirts!) and we thank them for providing their services when necessary. Even though our visits there are due to an ailing cub, staff always make the situation as stress-free as possible for us. 💚

‼️ In case you missed it here’s an important call to action for you, our supporters in Manitoba and around the world, to voice your concern to the powers that be over the possible closure of Manitoba’s ONLY black bear rescue. We hope you take a few minutes to speak up for the future orphaned cubs who would no longer have a place to go. Please share, thank you‼️

Whether in the den with mother or at a rehabilitation centre like ours, cubs start trying to stand, and then walk, at around 5 weeks old. Like clockwork, Winston was right on schedule. 👍
