Cedar Row Farm Sanctuary took in their first rescued farm animals in 1999. We are a small, family run sanctuary and rescue. Cedar Row has no paid employees and is run by dedicated volunteers. We are not open to the public but we offer regular work visits and 2 annual open houses a year.

Three little kittens are getting a fresh start! 🐾

We recently received a call from a woman desperate to find help for three kittens born at a recreational trailer park. She had contacted multiple rescues, but like so many right now, everyone was full.

Thankfully, Briana and Rylan stepped up and offered to foster them. The first two kittens were caught, but the third had disappeared. After a week with no sign of him, we feared he had been taken by a predator. But then, a week later, he showed up! He was safely caught and reunited with his siblings.

Yesterday, all three were spayed/neutered and microchipped. Once they’ve had some time to heal, we’ll be looking for the right forever home - or homes - for these three lucky little ones.

A special thank-you to their foster family for opening their home and helping give these kittens a safe, loving fresh start ❤️

Ozzy is approximately 5 months old and was sadly abandoned. He’s now safe, neutered, and looking for a forever home where he’ll be loved and cared for for the rest of his life.

Join us on Saturday, Sept 19th from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm for another volunteer work day and vegan potluck at Cedar Row!

We’re looking for a few helping hands to tackle some projects around the sanctuary and make life a little better for our rescued residents, like Kenny (pictured here)! 🐐

If you’re 16 or older and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, we’d love to have you join us for a few hours of meaningful work.

Afterwards, we’ll relax together with a vegan potluck, so bring a dish to share and enjoy some well-earned food with fellow animal lovers.

Meet Rolex!🦃

Rolex was hatched in a kindergarten classroom as part of a school hatching project. After the project ended, he was kept as a pet for two years before eventually making his way to Cedar Row.

Rolex was lucky. Many animals hatched in classrooms are not.

Hatching programs are often presented as a fun, educational way for children to learn about animals and life cycles. But very little attention is given to what happens to those animals once the lesson is over.

Chicks, ducklings and turkey poults grow up. They need appropriate housing, companionship, veterinary care and a safe home for the rest of their lives. Roosters can be especially difficult to place, and sanctuaries are already overwhelmed with requests to take unwanted birds.

Animals should not be brought into the world for a temporary classroom experience with no responsible plan for their future.

If we want to teach children compassion and respect for animals, we can start by teaching them that animals are not classroom projects. They are individuals whose lives continue long after the lesson ends.

Rolex is now safe at Cedar Row, where he gets to simply be a turkey ❤️

Another great work visit at Cedar Row! 🌱

Thanks to a hardworking crew, we got lots done around the sanctuary and finished the day with a delicious vegan potluck!

Joining us for the group photo was Rolex, the newest member of the Cedar Row family. 🦃 He made sure his gobbles were heard while everyone else said “vegan cheese.” 📸

A big thank you to everyone who came out, worked hard and helped make the day a success! 💚

Ten years ago today, our lives changed in an instant.

While working here at the sanctuary, a large wire punctured Pete’s right eye. He was rushed in for emergency surgery that same day. It was a traumatic experience for both of us, and the beginning of a long road of recovery.

Pete was off work for six weeks and needed more surgeries, along with countless appointments with an eye specialist. The injury permanently damaged his pupil, so it no longer dilates properly, and he was left with slightly blurred vision in that eye.

After a brief visit with Pete at the hospital later that night, our daughter Cicada and I came home and caught the last part of The Tragically Hip’s final concert, which was being aired live across Canada. It’s one of those memories that has stayed with me, especially because I had just seen them in person on August 8th, (filling in for my dear friend Sheri, who just passed away on July 12th) It was such an emotional end to an already overwhelming day.

We were incredibly fortunate that Pete’s eye and much of his vision could be saved, but the effects of that accident are still with him today.

2016 was, without a doubt, one of the most challenging years of our lives. There were so many life-changing events packed into that one year, and Pete’s accident was a big part of it.

It’s hard to believe 10 years have passed. Some days and some years leave a mark on you. For us, 2016 was definitely one of them.

Ever wonder why cows stick their tongues up their noses?

Cows have incredibly long, strong and flexible tongues, approximately 18–20 inches long! Since they can’t exactly grab a tissue, they use their tongues to clean mucus, dirt and bits of food from around their noses.
They also use their tongues for grooming themselves and each other.

So, as strange as it looks, a cow with her tongue up her nose is usually just displaying perfectly normal cow behaviour!

And yes… that’s Penny demonstrating it perfectly. 😂🐄
