We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Grinder, one of Grouse Mountain’s beloved resident grizzly bears.

Our hearts are with Grinder’s dedicated team and everyone at Grouse Mountain who loved and cared for him throughout his remarkable life. We are also thinking of Coola, his longtime companion, as he adjusts to this loss.

Grinder’s legacy will live on through the countless people he inspired to care about and protect wildlife. Rest peacefully, Grinder.

Poor Air Quality and your Pets!

As many of you are aware, the devastating wild fire burning in Pemberton is pushing smoke our way and affecting air quality throughout the Sea to Sky corridor. Poor air quality can impact our pets just as it affects people, and some animals are at greater risk than others.

Pets at higher risk include:
• Dogs and cats with heart or lung disease
• Senior pets
• Puppies and kittens
• Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds such as Pugs, Boxers and French Bulldogs.

Signs of smoke-related respiratory irritation may include:
• Coughing
• Wheezing or difficulty breathing
• Excessive panting
• Eye irritation or redness
• Lethargy
• Reduced appetite

You can help protect your pets by:
✅ Keeping outdoor activities short and limit strenuous exercise
✅ Walking dogs during times when air quality is better, if possible
✅ Keep your pets indoors with windows and doors closed
✅ Use air conditioning or an air purifier if available
✅ Always ensure fresh water is always accessible
✅ Monitor closely for any signs of respiratory distress

If your pet develops difficulty breathing, collapses, or shows significant respiratory symptoms, please seek veterinary care immediately. We are here for you and all your furry friends should you have ANY concerns.

For your information here is the link where you can check the current air quality advisories for the Squamish area.

This week's Weekly Whiskers & Wags star is Diesel!

If you've visited Garibaldi Veterinary Hospital, there's a good chance you've met Diesel! As the faithful sidekick of his 'Mom' Dina, he's become a familiar face around the clinic, and at 10 years young, he continues to remind us what resilience looks like.

Diesel has faced more than his fair share of health challenges, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), pancreatitis, and an adrenal gland tumour that required an adrenalectomy. Through it all, he's been surrounded by incredible care, unwavering love, and the support of our amazing Squamish community. Dina will always be grateful for the kindness shown during one of the most difficult times in Diesel's journey.

These days, Diesel is happiest exploring local trails, taking in the sights and smells of every adventure. And while he loves the great outdoors, he has one very unusual obsession... cats! Whether it's making friends with them or sneaking off with their toys, Diesel simply can't get enough of anything feline.

Despite everything he's been through, Diesel greets life with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a wagging tail. He's a wonderful reminder that with great veterinary care and a dedicated family, our senior pets can continue to enjoy the adventures they love.

We're so lucky to have Diesel as part of the GVH family and we know many of our clients feel the same.

Give Diesel some love in the comments! And tell us... does your dog have an unusual obsession?

This week's Weekly Whiskers & Wags star is Hurley!

Every pet has that one or more hilarious quirk(s) that makes their family laugh... and she has certainly mastered hers.

Meet Hurley, our resident underwear enthusiast. If her mom accidentally leaves any type of underwear within reach, Hurley doesn't just steal them, she proudly puts them on herself and parades around the house like she's walking the latest canine fashion runway. Needless to say, laundry is never left unattended in Hurley's home!

Beyond her impressive modelling career, Hurley is one of our favourite senior girls to see at Garibaldi Veterinary Hospital. She visits us regularly for 'spa days' aka senior wellness visits for nail trims, vaccinations, and help managing her a**l glands, which can sometimes become uncomfortable for her. Keeping up with her routine care helps her stay happy, comfortable, and ready to strut her stuff, preferably wearing her favourite (borrowed) accessory.

Hurley reminds us that growing older doesn't mean slowing down when it comes to personality. Her sweet nature and hearing about her antics never fails to brighten our day. A huge thank you to Hurley's mom for sharing the photographic evidence of our favourite Victoria's Secret Angel in training, we couldn't stop laughing!

Now we want to hear from you...

What's the funniest thing your pet does? Tell us in the comments, and if you have photo evidence, we'd absolutely love to see it!

Weekly Whiskers & Wags: Father’s Day Spotlight

This Father’s Day, we're celebrating a very special father-son duo: Dr. Honey and his furry "son," Jerry.

Jerry is a magnificent long-haired gentleman estimated to be about 12-14 years old. His story began as a stray, but these days he's living the good life, and making sure all family pets know who's in charge. While Dr. Honey may be the doctor, Jerry is unquestionably the boss of their family pets.

Over the years, Jerry has been managing pancreatitis, a condition that can affect a cat's appetite, comfort, and overall well-being. Thanks to attentive care, regular monitoring, and plenty of love from his devoted "dad," he's doing well and continues to keep both his family and our veterinary team on their toes.

When Jerry visits the clinic, his reputation arrives before he does. Beneath all that luxurious fluff is a cat who knows exactly what he wants, when he wants it, and isn't afraid to voice his opinions. Dr. Honey has learned that parenting a strong-willed senior cat requires patience, dedication, and occasionally accepting that Jerry will always try and have the final say.

We're inspired by senior pets like Jerry and the special bonds they share with the people who love them. This Father's Day, join us in celebrating Jerry: survivor, distinguished gentleman, self-appointed ruler of every room he enters, and the favourite "son" of Dr. Honey.

Happy Father's Day to all the pet dads out there!

We're starting a new feature: weekly whiskers & wags!

Dr. Honey's family dog Phoebe stopped by Garibaldi Veterinary Hospital this week to update her flea & tick medications, so she can safely enjoy all of her favourite activities this season! When she's not winning hearts at the clinic, Phoebe loves hitting the trails on hiking adventures and perfecting her second favourite hobby of pretending she's a lap dog.

Keeping up with flea & tick prevention helps adventurous pups like Phoebe (and her family with laps!) stay protected while she has outdoor adventures.

Thanks for visiting us, Phoebe! We know your summer will now be safely filled with plenty of hikes, cuddles, and tail wags.
