Lots of good training has been happening recently. A lot of horses at very different stages too. Young horses starting out, older horses unlearning pain responses and everything in between.
I love the variety of breeds and ages I have at the moment and having to problem solve in a way that the horse responds well too.
I would say I will post more, I have actually taken lots of videos of work recently, but the joy of not being on a phone or on social media is pretty great!

I’m having a fabulous holiday out in Kenya and very much enjoying some heat after a long Welsh winter.
Whilst I’ve been away I’ve had more interest with spring and summer coming, and will now be covering a wider area. I’m considering offering monthly lessons to those further afield in either a clinic setting or consecutive private lessons. If you’re interested in this kind of set up, I’ll be able to book these in from the 9th of May.

When I tell people to stay present when riding their horse…
Clearly filming and riding is not my forte, I wanted to get a quick video of Flo exploring the forest for the first time on a long relaxed rein. It’s easy sometime to forget this horse is so young as she has such a level head on her shoulders. I’m loving challenging her brain by taking her to places where she has to watch her footing and think about my head too! I had to lay flat on her a few times and let her pick the way but she did a fab job.

Flo’s next point of training will be riding with or next to other horses. Whilst fabulous alone, the mare in her really shines in company, so learning to interact with other horses while working in our next goal.

Next time I’ll do a better job of working my broken phone and looking out for trees at the same time 😅

Baby Gito has been doing a fab job of this riding business. Initially pretty reluctant to leave his friends he’s now much more confident to head out on short hacks alone. Taking it super steady with this boy as he is only rising four, so much more focus building his understanding and mental training while very slowly building muscle.
This baby hasn’t done a single circle or even stepped foot in a school, everything has been done in the barn then out and about exploring, in hand and under saddle. Exploring with your horses is very underrated, put them in situations where they have to find their feet, step over, go under, navigate slippy paths or cross a river. All of this is much more natural to them and will help slowly build confidence and all the big and stabilising muscles they will need for harder schooling later in life.

Ps. He said his shade of eyeshadow was just right so who am I to take it off.

Paj has also been loving his holiday on the island, grassy field and new places to explore.
I’m loving that he is so content and calm moving around, no stress about visiting new places just curiosity and intrigue.

If you get anxious or worried about taking your horse out, either in the trailer or just for a hack, there is a way to navigate that fear. Giving your horse the confidence to explore and releasing that urge to micromanage you can both start to enjoy outings again.

Loving my time house sitting on the island. It’s been a great opportunity to get some more regular work in with some of the horses up here.
Flo had her first trip to the forest this week, she loved every second. She rode on the buckle most of the way with a few schooling moments but mostly a chance for her to find her feet in canter and build her confidence on new trails.

Since being backed, Flo has only really had one working session a week over the last 8/9 months. Obviously more regular work provides faster training progress, but this just shows that doing one valuble training session a week, or 10 minutes here and there that have your full mental effort can still pay off.
A lot of my clients feel a sense of guilt for not training more, but life gets busy and sometimes it’s just not achievable. Instead, focus on the time you spend training being consistent in method and you will still see progression.

Lovey Dandy doing a fabulous job last week. Chilling out at the block and relaxing to a rider.
Although it may seem like a few steps back, dandy became so nervous of a saddle and his surroundings that he became very unpredictable and dangerous to ride. Making each step achievable and relaxing for him again is going to be the key to success.
That doesn’t mean everything has to be slow and gentle. He will also have to learn how to regulate his own emotions when we start doing higher energy work and schooling but for now, this is a fab result.

Last week, after some nice schooling on the beach I decided to take Paj’s bridle off for the walk home.
It’s been a while since we have played bridle-less but the moment felt right. He was attentive and moving beautifully off the leg and seat, plus, look at those happy ears!
Learning to trust your instincts as to when is the right time try something new is a good skill to have. Is your horse engaging enough, listening well to pressure and release cues to a point you feel ready to move on? Watch close enough and they will always tell you.
