What does success look like? For me, it’s seeing nutrition directly change an animal’s life.

If you’re new here, this is my first dog, Comet. We lost him to osteosarcoma just weeks after this was filmed. But looking back at these videos brings me so much joy because, before his diagnosis, he was finally thriving and free from his severe allergies because of nutrition changes. Every dog deserves that chance.

Is Your Pet’s Diet Really Balanced? Their Skin and Coat Might Be Telling You So.

The skin and coat are often the first signs of a nutritional imbalance and it’s not just homemade diets at fault (majority of homemade diets are unbalanced). Many commercial foods (even those labeled “complete and balanced”) can still fall short.

A large part of the work I do is helping owners move their pets off of these unbalanced diets and transitioning them to plans that are fully balanced according to both NRC and AAFCO standards.

👀 Deficiency signs to watch for:
Protein: Scaling, patchy hair loss, brittle/thin hair, loss of coat colour, delayed wound healing
Essential Fatty Acids: Greasy skin, mild scaling, dull coat
Zinc: Crusting and scaling around pressure points and mucocutaneous areas
Copper: Hair depigmentation, rough or dull coat
Vitamin A: Dry, flaky skin with follicular buildup
Vitamin E (in cats): Firm, painful fatty lumps (steatitis)
Vitamin B Complex: Dry coat, scaling, cheilosis from riboflavin deficiency

Just because a product is labeled “dinner,” “meal,” or “complete and balanced” doesn’t mean it’s truly supporting your pet’s health.

🌱 Let’s Talk Seed and Plant Oils in Pet Food 🌱

Have you ever heard that seed oils are horrible for pets and should always be avoided? Here’s the science.

When seed and plant oils are eliminated from a pet’s diet, you are likely removing a key essential fatty acid, linoleic acid (LA).

Linoleic acid, found in oils like sunflower oil, plays a critical role in skin health. It is a major building block of ceramides, which help maintain the cornified lipid envelope, also known as your pet’s skin barrier.

That barrier is what keeps moisture in and irritants out. Without enough LA, the skin barrier can become compromised, leading to itchy, flaky, unhealthy skin.

So instead of fearing all seed oils, the better question is this:
Is the formulation balanced and functional?
Does it supply essential nutrients like LA in the right ratios?

Nutrition is nuanced. Don’t let blanket statements lead to blanket deficiencies.

Spread The Word - The Truth About Liver Treats for Dogs 🐾

Beef liver is packed with nutrients, but did you know it can be too much of a good thing?

Liver is extremely high in vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin that isn’t easily flushed from the body like water-soluble vitamins. Because commercial diets are already balanced for vitamin A, adding concentrated sources (like liver treats) can push dogs over safe limits and lead to toxicity over time.

Regular supplementation (frequent liver treats or cod liver oil) can push levels beyond this threshold, increasing toxicity risk (Fascetti & Delaney, 2012).

While a little liver here and there is fine, moderation is key. Make sure your dog is on a complete and balanced diet with a Rise Wellness Plan 🐾
