One thing we are taught as groomers, is something called "whale eye" in dogs. Some of you may have seen it before, it's that look your dog gives you when he's uncomfortable, scared, or in guard mode. It is when you can see the whites of his eyes and he is sort of looking to the side.. this is absolutely something that should not be ignored, it is your dog communicating with you that it is uncomfortable. If I ever see whale eye in a dog that I am grooming, I immediately stop what I'm doing change positions, give the dog a break, and take him out of the situation. Here's a little blurb on whale eye, but I suggest everyone research is it a little bit especially for people who have children, are thinking of introducing new people or pets to the home, or go to the off-leash dog park.
