I’ve been quietly writing over on Substack for a while now — admittedly, very infrequently. But I’d love to start sharing more of it here.

Some of the things I want to talk about just don’t fit very well into a Facebook post.

The longer version of Rosabel — the why behind the things we do, what I’m learning about Beagles, breeding and showing, how we raise and place puppies, thoughts on preservation breeding, and probably a fair bit of learning-as-I-go — lives over there.

I’m certainly not an expert, and I don’t want these articles to read like I’m trying to be one. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have experienced breeders willing to teach me, and the more I learn about Beagles, the more I realize how much there still is to learn.

I’ve also been adding some practical information for people considering a Rosabel puppy, including answers to questions about our application and placement process that are a little too lengthy for Facebook.

There’s a lot more behind a litter than the eight weeks we get to watch the puppies grow, and this one has a particularly special story.

I’ve been incredibly privileged to build Rosabel Beagles alongside Suzanne and Jason Telford of Telford Beagles. Their mentorship, generosity with their knowledge, and willingness to share dogs and bloodlines they’ve spent decades developing has given me a foundation I’m very grateful for.

The sire of this litter is their boy, CH Telford’s I’m a Big Shot Too — “Shotsy.” And Shotsy himself exists because of a pretty remarkable opportunity.

His sire, Springfieldskyline’s Bigshot, had been gone for many years when Suzanne was given the opportunity to use some of the last remaining frozen semen from him. She bred it to her girl CH Telford’s Sparkle Bunny, and Shotsy was the result — bringing genetics from a dog of an earlier generation forward into a pedigree many years later.

Shotsy brings much more than an interesting pedigree, though. He has the beautiful Beagle type, balance, sound structure and temperament that I want to preserve as Rosabel develops. And because the Telfords know these dogs and the generations behind them so intimately, I’m not simply choosing a dog I like — I have the benefit of decades of knowledge behind what he may bring to a breeding.

That makes having Shotsy sire Penny’s first litter here at Rosabel feel especially significant. These puppies represent generations of careful breeding, a little bit of history that was quite literally saved in a freezer, and the generosity of breeders willing to share what they’ve built with the next generation.

I’m very grateful that Rosabel gets to be a small part of carrying it forward. ❤️

9 week glamour shots for my spicy girl. She’s so spunky and it’s been incredibly special to have her hang around a little longer. I get to meet her prospective new family on Saturday and am so excited that she is staying close by.

I’ve had a few inquiries about whether I still have puppies left. The short answer is, yes and no.

I do not have any pet puppies left, but I still have Wickie, aka “Rosabel’s This little Light of Mine”

I would like to keep Wickie, but the timing is just a little wrong for us to keep a puppy right now. I would like to find a local guardian home for her. I’m in no rush to find her a home and she will only leave our farm if the perfect guardian home shows up.

I would love to keep Wickie in my breeding program, but I think she deserves her own family. A guardian home would have complete guardianship of her, and make all the decisions regarding her health and well being, but she would need to return to the farm once to be bred and have a litter. After that, there would be no more obligations to keep.

I completely forgot to grab good-bye photos for this little boy, so I’m so glad his family sent me some as soon as they got home.

“Rosabels’s Red Sky by Morning” was without a doubt the one I got the most inquiries about. Sailor was the sweetest of the boys and the most unique. He is also staying local and I hope I’ll see him again :)

…and then there were two.

Keeper and Wickie were both waiting to meet Keepers family, but they were not waiting patiently, even though I managed to get them in a moment of stillness.

“Rosabel’s Sentinel of the Sea” is driving all the way back to Chilkiwack with his family in style. He was such a fun puppy and so very independent and loved to explore, he will fit right into that BC lifestyle ;)

He has the cutest new name … Huey!

I feel like it’s hard seeing any of the puppies go home, but some are a little harder. “Rosabel’s Safe Harbour” aka Peggy was the littlest, and therefore the favourite of my kids. She’s going to the nicest, local couple and they were so perfect for her.

Saying good bye to Mom just before her family came, and one last tiny nose “boop” from the popular puppy ;)

“Rosabel’s let Your Light Shine” aka Beamer waiting patiently for his forever family to show up on Saturday. He says thank you Purina Pro Plan for all the yummy treats that he gets to take home! ;)

Sometimes I choose puppies for families, sometimes they let me know which puppy they prefer, in this case Beamer chose his family. They showed up in August to meet the puppies and Beamer was very clear that he intended to go home with the little boy. It’s fun to be able to see those connections at the early meets and makes some do the choices so much easier for me to make!

One of our summer projects was putting up a new fence line so we could have the milk cows and horse closer to the house and barn. The beagles are not sure they like this new arrangement, but are figuring it out :)

“Rosabels Keep the Lights Burning” aka Gus was not so sure about his bath this morning. He was very brave though ❤️

I don’t usually give them bathes before they head home, the new families get to experience them in all their smelly puppy-ness, but it rained here yesterday, and Gus is flying all the way to Winnipeg in the cabin of a plane, so I figured it was the least I could do for the other passengers :) puppies can be pretty smelly!

I find people are on the fence with this one. Do you like puppy smells?
