Oodles of doodles this week. Thankfully, some of these pups have been with me for years (there's one newer face in there, as he's still a puppy.)
There is a special way to care for these types of coats, and I'm happy to do sessions with clients to go over proper brushing technique, tools and products. Yes, you need a detangling/conditioning spray, or you're making the job harder, most likely ripping coat, and it isn't pleasant for the dog. If you choose not to brush or know how to brush PROPERLY - I will most likely be shaving it. It isn't fair to the dog that no work is done in between grooming sessions and then the groomer is expected to give them a long haircut... one that won't be maintained. It's my job to advocate for the dogs. I will speak up about what needs to be worked on at home and behaviour.
I saw a great post the other day from a groomer saying "if you pick the schedule, I pick the haircut. If you pick the haircut, I pick the schedule." Moving forward, this is my motto.
