September is here โฆ and so are the ticks!๐
As pet owners, itโs important to check your pets regularly for ticks and prevent the diseases they carry through medication prescribed by your veterinarian. Ticks can often be carriers of the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis. These diseases are all preventable. Having pets on parasite prevention year-round can help avoid positive 4Dx test results, and keeps your pet happy and healthy.
When taking your pets outside, keep in mind that ticks thrive in:
๐ต Shaded areas along wood lines
๐ต Tall or unmowed grass
๐ต Heavily treed yards
๐ต Edges of walking paths
๐ต Damp, brushy areas
๐ต Leaf piles
Checking your pet for ticks thoroughly should be a regular part of your routine. If you find a tick on your pet, use a tick remover and once removed, dispose of the tick by drowning it in rubbing alcohol or lighting it on fire. Clean the area of attachment and monitor your pet for signs of infection.
Symptoms may not appear for weeks after the infected tick attaches itself to your pet. Consider scheduling a SNAP 4Dx test 8 weeks after the date you found a tick attached to your pet. If your pet experiences signs of lameness or lethargy, contact our veterinary team right away.
