🐾 For our new followers… welcome to PEC Dachshunds! 🐾
We’ve had quite a few new faces join our page lately, along with many puppy inquiries, so I thought it was a good time to introduce ourselves and share a little more about what we do and, more importantly, why we do it. ❤️
For the past five years, we have been building our breeding program around one main goal: preserving and improving the Dachshund breed we love so much.
We are not breeding simply to produce puppies. We breed purposefully, first and foremost for ourselves and for the future of our program. Every pairing is planned with the hope of producing something we may want to retain—whether that means improving structure, temperament, health, movement or another quality we are working toward in the next generation.
Our breeding dogs are health tested, and we believe health testing is an incredibly important part of responsible breeding. But our dogs are also much more than breeding dogs. They are our family. ❤️
We participate in conformation because having our dogs evaluated against the breed standard matters to us, and we also enjoy getting out and trying different sports and activities with them. We want our Dachshunds to be healthy, functional, confident dogs that can do things, while still looking and behaving like the breed they were intended to be.
And sometimes responsible breeding means not breeding at all.
Last year, we produced only two litters. This year, we have had just one.
We cannot—and will not—produce puppies like a vending machine simply because there is demand for them. 🐾
There may be times when our waitlist is longer than our puppy availability. There may be colours, coats or sexes we simply don’t have. Sometimes a planned breeding doesn’t take. Sometimes we decide a dog isn’t the right fit for our breeding program. And sometimes the puppy we hoped to produce for ourselves just isn’t born.
That’s breeding.
When puppies are available to companion homes, those families are benefiting from a breeding that was thoughtfully planned for the future of our program—not a litter produced simply because people were looking for puppies.
We are incredibly grateful for every family who chooses to wait for one of our puppies and understands that good breeding takes time. ❤️
Our dogs are our pets first, our show and sport partners second, and only a very small part of their lives is spent contributing to our breeding program.
Five years in, we are still learning, still growing, still setting goals and still working toward the Dachshunds we hope to see generations from now.
Thank you for following along with our dogs, our litters, our adventures, the wins, the lessons and everything in between.
This isn’t about producing more Dachshunds.
It’s about doing our part to preserve the Dachshund. 🐾❤️
