On May 3rd, we shine the spotlight on pets with extra needs. They are often over looked but can make great companions.
If you understand the kind of care some of these pets may need, you may consider adopting a specially-abled pet into your life.

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. While it is not the only tick borne disease out there, it is a very common one.
To help prevent Lyme disease, it is important to prevent ticks from being able to pass it.
Check your pets at least once daily for any ticks, even if they are indoor only as ticks can get inside.
Make sure your pet is on a tick preventative medication all year round (adding heartworm prevention from June-November).
Look out for any signs of Lyme disease including lameness, joint swelling, fever, lethargy and decreased appetite.

Heartworm tests are also recommended yearly to check not only for Heartworm, but for Lyme, Ehrlichia and Anaplasmosis.
