If your horse is in distress, what you do before the vet arrives matters.

1️⃣ Stay safe – Horses in pain can react unpredictably.
2️⃣ Limit movement – Keep them as still as possible unless they’re in danger.
3️⃣ Remove feed if advised – Especially in cases like colic or choking.
4️⃣ Observe and note symptoms – Changes in behaviour, timing, and signs can help your vet.
5️⃣ Clear the area – Make space for the vet to work safely.

And most importantly: call your vet right away and follow their instructions.

FACT: Lameness isn’t always easy to spot.

Subtle signs like shortened stride, stiffness when warming up, uneven movement, or reluctance to perform can all point to underlying discomfort. Horses are incredibly good at compensating, so what looks “normal” might actually be your horse adjusting to pain.

Here’s what to expect at Delaney Vet when you arrive:

Easy trailer & client parking on arrival, then check in at the main clinic. Your horse stays safely tied or in the trailer until your appointment. From there, our team will assess your horse, the vet will examine and walk you through next steps, and you’ll leave with a clear treatment plan (and notes if needed).

We’re also a teaching hospital, so you may see students involved, always under direct supervision, with your horse’s care as the top priority.
