Well… 6 weeks ago I injured my knee so I haven’t been able to do much besides physio and watching my plants grow. I am certain I will be able to get back sewing in another 10 or so days. By then the hamstring tear will have completely healed and the MCL strain will be nearly gone. Whew. Not fun. With that said, I have started to be able to wash blankets . Nice. Don’t be afraid to message me with your blanket care needs and inquiries. Thank you to all my regular clients your patience and understanding.
Shelley.

I think we are safe washing all our winters and liners now. Spring sure came late this year. Dont leave your dirty winters wet, let them dry if you dont plan on getting them washed soon. Don’t use detergents like Tide or Gain, detergents strip off the manufacturers waterproofing plus they rinse out very poorly. Scented detergents and soaps create skin issues. Never use fabric softeners unless it’s a blanket or saddle pad rinse. Never wash in hot water because the heat shrinks plastic fibres , same goes with using a dryer to dry the blanket. To properly wash a blanket, remove any necks, unclip the tail strap if necessary, clip leg straps onto their d-rings, remove any fur and manure, safety pin holes shut, wash using horse blanket soap and don’t add extra soap , wash using warm water and hang the blanket to dry. Once dry, repair , waterproof if necessary and store away. I have seen many an improperly washed blanket that could have been used for a handful more winters become shrunk, unwaterproof with weakened fabrics from detergents. I hope this helps.

Not sure how both attached leg strap were so cleanly torn off this winter turnout. As for the rear dart reinforcement webbing…. If there is a fraction of an inch sticking out, someone will find it and tear it off with their teeth. Both rear darts were damaged on this blanket. Arg.

This poor blanket has layers of repairs and is still being used. She wasn’t concerned about fabric matching as long as the repairs were solid. I used end scraps and gave her a deal for the miss matched patches. Central Alberta still has plenty of snow with cold day time and night time temps so winter blankets are still in use right now. Spring is very, very late this year.

This 75 inch, 100g Summit turnout had its lining and insulation torn right out with the exterior unharmed. I replaced the insulation with a denser batting making it a 300g blanket. Summit blankets have their linings only attached to the blanket via the edge trim and hardware anchor spots so it is possible to do what I did at a very affordable price .

I usually do not make cushions but when a dear friend asks, I will. His dogs destroyed the 2 patio sofa cushions making it very hard to get dimensions but I managed. Foam is very expensive and the price of fabrics has doubled in the past few years. Add in that 5 inch thick foam is not super common and you have some pricey squares even before I start sewing.

Yet another front corner chew.
He may have chewed it out of boredom ( usually both front corners are chewed if its boredom) or he was too hot… (which he was ) or sometimes its a paddock mate that chews on another blanket. At any rate both layers were repaired.
Now, as for the chest straps… if your chest straps come with two or more keepers, PLEASE use them. They prevent massive damage when they accidentally become looped around something that does not give. I have repaired far too many that could have easily been prevented. I rarely repair ones that are slid through all the keepers. Keepers are there for a reason.

A little nip here and tuck there sure makes a blanket, sheet, liner, cooler fit better and thus the blanket works better. The black wool cooler ( my LED cutting table lights are not colour true in photos) was a dream to alter. Wool is just the best. The other black cooler is made with polar fleece and it too was a joy to work on. They look factory sewn where I altered them.

Hello everyone. Sorry for not posting any photos…I just never remember to take before or after photos let alone remembering to post any. I am continually busy with blankets so that hasn’t changed.
This is a 4 year old, 76 inch, Shedrow Elite heavy winter turnout. In some areas the patches are 4 deep. I always take time to flatten out and even
out the layers of the original blanket before I sew on patches either inside or outside. Its tricky but very do-able . This blanket has had extensive repairs and it is still 76 inches long. The lining is in new condition as well as the exterior cordura so repairing this is well worth it.
