There is always a wealth of information to discover in veterinary medicine, and here at Pulse Veterinary Specialists, we believe in empowering the next generation of veterinarians to be part of that discovery.

Beyond training veterinary students, interns, and residents, we encourage our them to explore challenging and rare cases, ask questions, and pursue research that contributes to the ever-growing body of knowledge in our field.

This sweet fancy pigeon/flying tippler found his way to our hospital in Sherwood Park, AB on Saturday, August 15th. We’ve been working with local rescues and Bylaw to help figure out where he belongs, and now we’re hoping our community can lend a hand!

🐾 National Check the Chip Day 🐾

August 15th is National Check the Chip Day! 🐶🐱💚 Established by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), this day is a reminder to make sure your pet’s microchip is registered and that your contact information is up to date.

Here in our emergency department, we see many lost pets come through our doors, and one of the best parts of our job is seeing so many of these fur kiddos reunited with their families — all because they had a microchip! 🥹❤️

A microchip can make all the difference if your pet ever gets lost. But remember, a microchip is only as helpful as the information registered to it! 📱

👉 Does your pet not have a microchip? Contact your primary veterinarian to get one placed.

👉 Does your pet already have a microchip? Take a few minutes today to make sure your phone number, address, email, and emergency contact information are all current.

You never know when that tiny chip might be the reason your beloved pet finds their way home. 🏡🐾

We’re currently experiencing an issue with our phone system where some calls are receiving a busy signal and are unable to connect with our team. This is not happening with every call, but we have also been made aware that some clients calling into the hospital have received this busy signal.

Tiny patient, big injury. 🐈‍⬛

This kitten presented with a traumatic mandibular degloving injury, where the soft tissues of the lower jaw had been separated from their underlying attachments.

With injuries like this, what we see externally doesn't always tell the whole story. Advanced imaging and a thorough oral examination are important to assess for concurrent mandibular/maxillofacial fractures, TMJ injury, dental trauma, and damage to developing permanent teeth.

Fortunately for this little one, no fractures were identified. After careful lavage, conservative debridement and reconstruction of the degloved tissues, recovery has been going beautifully. ❤️‍🩹

One of the wonderful things about treating young patients: their healing potential can be pretty remarkable!

👀 Sometimes seeing is believing!

This young, intact male dog came to us because he was having trouble urinating. 🐶

His X-rays didn't reveal much other than a very enlarged bladder, and his ultrasound showed only a few small bladder stones. But when we took a closer look inside his bladder, we discovered something surprising...

Using a cystoscopy — a minimally invasive procedure that uses a tiny camera to look directly inside the urinary tract and bladder — we were able to see what was really going on. 🔍

🪨 His bladder contained a huge collection of stones of all shapes and sizes, ranging from tiny grains of sand to stones several centimeters across!

Not all bladder stones are created equal, and these are a particularly unique type. 🔬
