🦜🚨Let’s Talk About Emergency Kits
Day 1 — Electrolytes & Hydration Support

One of the fastest ways a sick parrot can decline is dehydration. Birds often stop eating and drinking long before owners realize how serious things are, and once dehydration sets in they can weaken very quickly.

That’s why electrolytes are one of the emergency supplies every parrot owner should consider keeping on hand.

Electrolytes can help support hydration during illness, stress, overheating, travel, injury recovery, weather emergencies, or while arranging emergency veterinary care. They are not a cure, but they can help support a bird that may already be struggling.

A simple homemade emergency electrolyte solution can be made by combining:
• 1 cup warm water
• 2 teaspoons sugar
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 1/8 teaspoon baking soda

Mix thoroughly until fully dissolved.

A few important things to remember:
• This is temporary supportive care only
•⚠️It should NEVER replace an avian vet visit
• Fresh solution should be changed frequently
• Not every sick bird will drink on their own
• Having supplies BEFORE an emergency is always easier than scrambling during one

There is no single “most important” emergency item because every emergency is different. A dehydrated bird has different needs than a bleeding bird, overheated bird, or a bird during a power outage.

That’s why this series will focus on many different emergency items that all play an important role depending on the situation.

Stay tuned for Day 2 🦜
