Something new might be coming to Canine Compass!

I'm thinking about starting Canine Connections, a group walking experience where dogs and their humans can get outside, learn, and work toward their individual goals in a shared environment!

These would be no-interaction walks. Dogs would not be expected to greet or interact with one another, allowing everyone to focus on their own dog while practicing calm behaviour around other dogs.

Nervous, reactive, and dog-aggressive dogs are welcome! These walks would provide an opportunity to work on things like leash skills, confidence, focus, and calmly navigating the presence of other dogs, all while maintaining appropriate distance and respecting each dog's needs.

The goal isn't to have every dog become friends. It's to create an environment where dogs and handlers can learn, build skills, and enjoy getting out together without the pressure of social interaction.

Before I start planning our first outing, I want to know:

Would you be interested in joining a Canine Connections Walk?

Let me know in the comments! I'd love to hear if this is something you'd like to see offered through Canine Compass.

🐾 DOES YOUR DOG IGNORE YOU OUTSIDE?

Your dog sits perfectly in the living room, comes when called in the backyard, and suddenly seems to forget everything the moment you step into a busy park.

Does that mean they're being stubborn? Not necessarily.

Dogs don't automatically understand that a behaviour learned in one environment applies everywhere. New smells, unfamiliar people, other dogs, and exciting surroundings all add difficulty.

Think of training as building layers of understanding. Before expecting your dog to respond reliably around major distractions, help them practise in gradually more challenging environments.

A few things to remember:

- Start somewhere your dog can focus.
- Increase distractions gradually instead of changing everything at once.
- Reward the behaviours you want to see repeated.
- If your dog struggles, make the task easier before trying again.

Training isn't just teaching a dog what a cue means. It's helping them learn how to respond in different situations.

Meet your dog where they are, and build from there.

At Canine Compass, we believe better communication starts with understanding the dog in front of you.

Meet Martin!

I have the pleasure of caring for this handsome guy for the next few days, and I think it's safe to say he's settling in just fine. 🤣

Martin is a 1.5-year-old Beagle with a whole lot of personality packed into that adorable face. He's absolutely loving his car rides, having a blast playing with our poodles, Nacho and Gator, and making sure everyone knows exactly what he thinks with that classic Beagle bay. 📣😂

He's being treated like the royalty he clearly believes he is, and honestly... just look at that face. How could you not? 👑

I'm pretty sure Martin is going to have a very good few days here. ❤️

🐾 I've been a little quiet around here...

And I'm sorry about that! Things have been BUSY behind the scenes at Canine Compass, which is honestly a pretty good problem to have. 😂

Between training, pet sitting, grooming, dog walking, and everything else that comes with growing a business, I've been spending a lot more time working with pets and a lot less time making Facebook posts about it!

But I'm still here, and Canine Compass is growing! 🥰

With colder weather coming, I've decided to officially offer dog walking. So let me brave the cold for you! 😂

Regular Walks

For potty breaks, exercise, sniffing, and giving your dog some time to get out and enjoy the world.

15 min: $15
30 min: $22
45 min: $30
60 min: $38

Training Walks

Focused on things like loose-leash walking, engagement, impulse control and neutrality.

30 min: $27
45 min: $35
60 min: $45

These are starting prices and may vary depending on the individual dog. Reactive, fearful, or dogs requiring additional handling may need an evaluation and adjusted pricing.

Repeat walking clients and clients who train with Canine Compass get access to discounted rates, and if you're booking multiple services, we can chat about package pricing too! 🐾

Not sure which option is right for your dog? Just send me a message!

Your dog gets a walk. You stay warm. Everybody wins. 🐾❄️

What is an exposure outing for if not to try on hats?

Spirit Halloween seemed like the perfect place to get a little exposure practice in because, despite being a very good girl, Bug is not entirely convinced that animatronics are trustworthy. 😂

So naturally, we did what any responsible dog trainer would do...

We tried on hats.

And then more hats.

And then somehow even more hats.

The goal wasn't to make Bug interact with everything or force her to "get over it." It was simply giving her the opportunity to experience a weird environment, see some strange moving decorations, take things in at her own pace, and learn that spooky-looking things don't necessarily require a reaction.

And apparently, hats were much easier to accept than the possessed Halloween decorations. 😂

Exposure outings don't always look like formal training sessions. Sometimes they're just little adventures where your dog gets to experience something new, build confidence, and have a good time along the way.

10/10 exposure outing. 0/10 confidence in the animatronics. 🎃

Pictured are some of our favorite hats!

What does training look like?

Your dog's program is fully customized to their needs and your goals. Whether you're working with a puppy, an adult dog, leash skills, basic obedience, reactivity, neutrality, confidence, or something completely different, we'll build a plan around your individual dog.

The program includes:
• 8 weekly one-hour sessions
• Homework between sessions
• Support throughout the week for questions and concerns
• A fully customized training plan
• $800 for the 8-week program
• Payment plans can be arranged

And before you commit to anything, evaluations are FREE!

I also have some flexibility for evaluations outside of the regular training times listed above, so if none of these times work for you, send me a message anyway.

Training isn't about creating a perfect dog. It's about helping you and your dog understand each other better and giving you both the tools to navigate life together.

Lets talk!

What do you wish you had better access to when it comes to pets and animal care?

Maybe it's more puppy classes instead of having to figure everything out alone.

Maybe it's more service dog advocacy instead of misunderstanding.

Maybe it's better access to education, support, or pet-friendly activities.

Whether you have a dog, cat, or another kind of animal, what do you feel is missing?

I'm building Canine Compass to be more than just a pet service.

I want it to be a place where people can find helpful information, support, and opportunities to better understand and care for their animals.

So what would you like to see more of?

Fern wants more dedicated nap times!
