Tonight during Lightning’s session, a Canadian Tire employee asked if she could pet her. I explained that Lightning is learning to be a medical alert dog and was working. When she asked again, I simply said, “Lightning isn’t really in the mood for pets today.” Lightning actually leaned further into me, so I respected what she was communicating and held that boundary.
The employee smiled, accepted it, and we carried on. On our way out, she gave us another big smile and a “see you later.” Not every interaction with the public needs to be a huge educational moment. Some people genuinely just don’t know.
No “can’t you read the vest?” No attitude. Just kindness, a clear boundary, and a positive experience with a service dog in training. Sometimes that’s advocacy too.
