Emeth Zoo

Emeth Zoo Emeth Zoo is a small “hobby collector” of a variety of reptiles and invertebrates.

The name comes from the first two letters of Emmy’s name and the last three letters of Seth’s name, and was started as a "game" they played with their toys. Over the years they have hatched caterpillars and watch them turn into butterflies, they have hatched mantis oothecas (egg case) and watched them grow from tiny nymphs into large adult mantis which eventually laid their own ootheca. They have

also enjoyed collecting tadpoles and watching them grow into frogs before releasing them back into the pond we caught them in. In 2016 we purchased our first Crested Geckos, and the summer of 2017 saw our first geckos hatch. A few months later we purchased a pair of Gargoyle Geckos, and have produced some beautiful and healthy baby gargoyles. We have not been breeding reptiles the past few years - but still occasionally have extra invertebrates that are looking for a new home.

Ever seen an insect perfectly disguised as a twig?

These native Canadian walking sticks (Diapheromera femorata) are one of the most fascinating insects to observe. Quiet, gentle, and masters of camouflage — they sway like tiny branches in the wind.

They’re currently enjoying fresh raspberry leaves (a favourite), and watching them grow and molt is surprisingly captivating for both kids and adults.

We currently have some available for anyone interested in raising these incredible insects at home or in a classroom setting.

Poe, our Hermann’s tortoise, is definitely excited for spring! Today he enjoyed his very first dandelion flower of the year — and it’s safe to say it was a hit.

Both of our North American Giant Millipedes (Narceus americanus) emerged from beneath the leaves tonight and immediately started making their rounds when they caught the scent of fresh mushroom slices.

There’s something oddly mesmerizing about watching these gentle giants move—dozens of tiny legs working in perfect rhythm as they investigate every corner of their world.

Despite their intimidating size, Narceus americanus are harmless detritivores, helping break down decaying plant matter in forest ecosystems. Quiet, slow-moving, and surprisingly curious.

More than a decade ago, we introduced butterflies to our kids for the very first time — and it’s still one of the most amazing ways to spark wonder, curiosity, and a love of learning in young minds.

This is Seth at 4-years old.

In this video, Seth gives his own explanation of what happens when a butterfly emerges from its chrysalis… and honestly, seeing the excitement and awe through a child’s eyes never gets old.

There’s something pretty incredible about watching transformation happen right in front of you — and hearing a young learner try to make sense of it all.

One of our stick insect nymphs (Diapheromera femorata) made a surprise appearance this morning while I was cleaning and feeding the colony… and promptly decided this little magnetic sphere (normally just holding leaves in place) was the perfect stage for a dance.

Tiny feet, big personality.

Northern walking sticks are the only species of phasmid legal to keep in Canada. They are native to southern Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta.
