Did you know double coated dogs shed all year round?!?

You cannot stop shedding, but you can manage it. Shedding is affected by genetics, diet, hormones, and our daylight cycles.

Double-coated dogs have a two-part hair growth cycle where primary (guard) hairs grow slowly over months/years for protection, while secondary (undercoat) hairs grow quickly and shed every 21-56 days. This cycle is triggered by light/temperature, causing massive “coat blowing” in spring and fall.

This is why we recommend consistent grooming every 6-8 weeks. Staying on a consistent schedule keeps shedding controlled, skin healthy, and the coat looking and feeling amazing!

Frequently Asked Friday! Is cat grooming safe?

Yes! When it’s done correctly and with the cat’s wellbeing as the top priority.

I’m a Certified Feline Master Groomer, which means my training is specific to cats, their behavior, anatomy, stress signals, coat types, skin, and safety needs. Cat grooming is not the same as dog grooming, and it should never be treated that way.

Grooms are done using cat-specific, low-stress techniques, working at your cat’s pace with breaks as needed. Each appointment is adjusted based on your cat’s age, health, coat condition, and temperament. Safety also means knowing when to modify or stop a groom. A calm, partial groom is always safer than forcing a full one.

There is no “one size fits all” in cat grooming. Every decision is made with your cat’s physical comfort and emotional safety in mind, especially for seniors, sensitive cats, or those with medical concerns.

When grooming is done by a trained professional who understands cats, yes, it is safe, beneficial, and focused on your cat’s wellbeing first 💙🐱

Did you Know?

Did you know that the majority of our medium and large breed dogs are groomed by two groomers?

This allows for less time on the grooming table, which can result in a more enjoyable experience for your pooch!

Double the groomer means double the smooches and scratches!

Two groomers allow for extra hands on help for dogs that require more attention for health reasons, behavioural reasons, or dogs that are quite nervous.

Meet Rachel!

Rachel has been with The Mutt Hutt over 2 years and is great with our nervous dogs!

Rachel has two dogs at home, Lucy and Linus,her cat, Mono, and rat, Delisle.

Rachel’s free time is usually spent painting and baking.

Fun Fact: Rachel competed at the Canada Games in wheelchair basketball!
