A summer tip every Saskatchewan pet owner needs to hear.
Prairie heat can be deceptively dangerous for dogs. Asphalt and concrete absorb heat and can burn paw pads long before you realize the ground is too hot. A good rule of thumb: if you cannot hold the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds comfortably, it is too hot for your dog's paws.
Walk early in the morning or later in the evening, keep fresh water accessible at all times, and watch for signs of overheating, including heavy panting, drooling, or sluggishness. On the hottest days, limit outdoor time and never leave your dog in a vehicle, even briefly.
Your dog counts on you. Keep them cool this summer.
