Fireworks & Pet Safety: Help Your Pets Stay Calm This Season 🐾

With the summer season, come summer holidays and celebrations. Celebrations come with a variety of exciting things for people including fireworks, but for many pets they can be frightening and stressful. Loud noises, bright flashes, and unexpected booms may cause anxiety, panic, or attempts to escape.

Here are a few ways to help keep your pet safe and comfortable:

✅ Keep pets indoors during fireworks displays
✅ Make sure collars, ID tags, and microchip information are up to date
✅ Create a quiet, secure space with familiar bedding and toys
✅ Close windows, curtains, and blinds to reduce noise and flashes
✅ Use calming music, white noise, or a fan to help mask sounds
✅ Stay calm and offer reassurance if your pet seeks comfort

If your pet has a history of severe anxiety during fireworks, don't wait until the last minute. Talk with your veterinarian ahead of time about strategies to help, including behavior recommendations, calming products, or prescription medications that may be appropriate for your pet.

Every pet is different, and your veterinarian can help create a plan tailored to your pet's needs.

Every Monday, we share one of our staff members’ companion animals and give you a peek into their personality and life at home. This week we’re excited to spotlight Mekayla’s kitty, Fender Bender — a 4-year-old Lynx Point Domestic Shorthair! 🐈✨

1️⃣How long have you had your pet and where did you get them from?
"I have had Fender for 4 years. He was brought into a veterinary clinic as a stray after being found tucked inside the fender of a truck at just 6 weeks old. When nobody came forward to claim him, I took him home—and the rest is history!" 💙

2️⃣What is their funniest or weirdest habit?
“His favorite treat is lettuce! While most pets demand the cheese tax, Fender demands the lettuce tax. On that note, no plants are safe in his house.” 🥬🐾

3️⃣If they had a job, what would it be?
“A disgruntled manager who never approves PTO.” 😾📋

4️⃣What are their nicknames?
Fender, Fen, Honey Buns 💛

5️⃣What’s one preventative care step you never skip for your pet?
“Both of my cats are neutered males and eat a prescription dental and urinary diet, Hill’s Feline T/D. This food helps keep their teeth clean and supports urinary health by helping prevent urinary crystals, which can lead to urinary blockages—especially in neutered male cats.” 🦷🐱

🦠 Parvovirus: What Every Dog Owner Should Know 🐾

Spring time brings new life, including new canine family members. With the increase of new puppies we have noticed an increase in cases of Parvovirus. Canine parvovirus (parvo) is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening virus that primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs.

⚠️ Common Signs of Parvo:
• Severe vomiting
• Bloody diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy and weakness
• Fever or low body temperature
• Dehydration

Parvo attacks rapidly dividing cells in the body, especially those in the intestines, leading to severe gastrointestinal illness. Without prompt veterinary care, the disease can become fatal.

🐶 How Does Parvo Spread?
The virus is spread through contact with infected f***s, contaminated surfaces, food and water bowls, shoes, clothing, and even soil. Parvo is extremely hardy and can survive in the environment for months to years.

💉 Prevention is Key
The best protection against parvo is vaccination. Puppies should receive a series of vaccines beginning at a young age, followed by booster vaccines as recommended by your veterinarian.

🏥 When to Seek Veterinary Care
If your puppy or dog develops vomiting, diarrhea, or appears unusually tired, contact your veterinarian immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve the chances of recovery.

Every Monday, we share one of our staff members’ companion animals and give you a peek into their personality and life at home. This week we’re excited to spotlight Mekayla’s kitty, Sootsprite — a 3-year-old black domestic shorthair! 🐈‍✨

1️⃣How long have you had your pet and where did you get them from?
"I adopted Sootsprite 3 years ago. He was originally brought into a veterinary clinic as a frostbitten stray at around 16 weeks old after someone found him rummaging through their trash. Nobody claimed him, so I took him home to be a companion for my other cat, Fender Bender. He is lovingly named after the Sootsprite characters from a popular film studio." 💙

2️⃣What is their funniest or weirdest habit?
“Sootsprite LOVES to play fetch with his springs. He drops them at my feet, meows, sits (because he is a polite boy) and waits patiently until I throw them for him again.” 🐾

3️⃣If they had a job, what would it be?
“Lazy Security Guard — he spends his days patrolling the windows.” 👀🛡️

4️⃣What are their nicknames?
Soot, Soots, Sprite, Little Weasel. Alley Cat 🖤

5️⃣What’s one preventative care step you never skip for your pet?
“Sootsprite is a busy cat who likes to get into trouble when he’s bored, so I use enrichment tools like puzzle toys and kleenex boxes with kibble hidden inside to mentally stimulate him and keep him out of trouble.” 🧩🐱

We are beyond excited to celebrate two incredible members of our team Haylie-Ann and Brooke who have officially been accepted into the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan! 🐾📚

From caring for our patients and supporting pet families every day to taking the next big step toward becoming veterinarians, their hard work, dedication, and passion for animal health have truly paid off.

We couldn't be prouder of everything they've accomplished and know they will make amazing veterinarians in the future. While we'll miss having them in the clinic regularly, we're thrilled to watch them chase their dreams and continue making a difference in the lives of animals.

✨🐱Cat Enrichments🐱✨

Enrichment is an important part of keeping our feline friends happy, healthy, and mentally stimulated. From puzzle feeders and lick mats to wand toys, scratching posts, cat tunnels and treat games, different types of enrichment help encourage natural cat behaviours like hunting, exploring, climbing, and problem solving! 🐾

Not only is enrichment is fun, but it can also help reduce stress, prevent boredom, build confidence, and provide important mental and physical exercise 🩵

Every Monday, we'll be sharing one of our staff members' companion animals and giving you a peek into their personality and life at home. This week we're excited to spotlight Katie's kitty, Winky. Winky is a 5 year old, domestic mediumhair!😸

1️⃣How long have you had your pet and where did you get them from?
Katie has owned Winky since she was about 12 weeks old. She adopted her from the Saskatoon SPCA after Katie recovered her from her pediatric spay procedure!

2️⃣What is their funniest or weirdest habit?
"Ball is life! She has these soft sparkle balls that she will run up and down the stairs with all afternoon and sit with it in her mouth until it's soaked. She will also play fetch with them if she's in the right mood."

3️⃣If they had a job, what would it be?
"Soccer player for sure."

4️⃣What are their nicknames?
Smoosh, Scootch, Smish, Wonky (when she's being naughty)

5️⃣What's one preventative care step you never skip for your pet?
"Winky gets a prescription VOHC approved dental diet and we do regular dental cleanings to keep up with oral health. We also do annual bloodwork to make sure I'm monitoring for changes as she ages."

How often should dogs be dewormed? 🐶🐛

There's no one-size-fits-all answer, your dog's lifestyle, age, and risk factors all play a role in how often they should recieve parasite prevention.

Puppies are especially vulnerable and typically need more frequent deworming early in life. 🐾

Adult dogs may be at higher risk if they:
- Visit dog parks
- Hunt or scavenge
- Eat raw diets
- Spend lots of time outdoors
- Live with other pets or young children

Some intestinal parasites can spread to people, making prevention important for the whole family.

Since many dogs with parasites show no obvious signs, routine f***l testing and preventative care are key to catching problems early. 💛
