💉 Vaccines Protect Pets & Communities 🐾

Vaccines safely train your pet’s immune system to recognize and fight serious infections before they cause disease.

Veterinary vaccines undergo extensive research, safety testing, and regulatory review over years before being approved for use.
Vaccination has dramatically reduced diseases such as canine distemper, parvovirus, infectious canine hepatitis, and feline panleukopenia in vaccinated pet populations.

Canada has also eliminated the canine variant of rabies from its dog population, largely through successful vaccination programs—although wildlife rabies remains present, so continued vaccination is essential.

Side effects are usually mild, and serious vaccine reactions are rare; for most pets, the protection provided greatly outweighs the risks.
When many pets are vaccinated, we help create community immunity, reducing disease spread and protecting vulnerable animals too. ❤️🐶🐱

🐾 FOREIGN BODY INGESTION IN PETS — DOES IT ALWAYS MEAN SURGERY? 🐶🐱

Dogs and cats are curious by nature, and sometimes that curiosity leads them to swallow things they shouldn’t! Toys, fabric, bones, string, plastic, socks and other objects can potentially become gastrointestinal foreign bodies.

But not every foreign body ingestion automatically requires surgery.

Recently, one of our adorable little puppy patients swallowed a needle. Because of the potential risks, she was carefully evaluated by our veterinarian and monitored with serial radiographs (X-rays) to track the object’s movement through her gastrointestinal tract. Fortunately, it continued to progress safely and eventually passed naturally in her stool without surgical intervention. ❤️🐾

Every case is different. Depending on the object, its size and location, your pet’s symptoms, and whether it is moving normally, your veterinarian may recommend careful monitoring, additional imaging, endoscopic removal, or surgery.

⚠️ If you know or suspect that your dog or cat has swallowed a foreign object, please contact a veterinarian promptly. Do not simply wait for it to pass without veterinary advice. Some objects can cause an intestinal obstruction, perforation, or other serious complications, while others may be safely monitored under veterinary supervision.

At Sarnia Veterinary Urgent Care (SVUC), our team can assess your pet and help determine the safest next step.

This case is shared for educational purposes. The outcome of one patient should not be used to predict whether another foreign body will pass safely.
