Happy CAT-urday from sweet Princess - one of the first 10 cats brought in from the north SSI black cat colony this year. Princess is approximately 6 months old and is being fostered by rock-star foster mom Mary. So you know she's going to be great! She is already SUCH a purr-machine and LOVES being held!

Princess must have been born last fall and thankfully was one of the kittens who survived through the winter. We are thrilled to have her in our care and can't wait to find her a PURRfect home - maybe it could be with you?

Princess has been spayed, vaccinated (FVRCP and rabies), treated for fleas and parasites, microchipped, and tested for FIV / FeLV (negative). If you might be interested in meeting Princess, please reach out. She does need a couple more weeks in Mary's 'finishing school' - but she is almost ready to be adopted.

For more information, or to set up an appointment to meet Princess, please reach out to us - [email protected] / 236-508-2287

Thanks so much to our adopters Lynn and Jeff for sending us this awesome update about Angus and Lizzie as they turned THREE YEARS OLD last week:

"Hi Jenn, just a wee update on Angus and Lizzie. They’re 3 years old today!!!🥳
They’re both doing very well. Still enjoying the motor home. They travelled to Alberta last fall. They love adventures!
Still so grateful to you for bringing them into our lives!!!"

We are so grateful to you for fostering them (together with their mom cat 'Grandma Carol') and giving them such a wonderful and fulfilling life!

We look forward to hearing from you next year when the 'kittens' turn FOUR (or maybe even sooner!).

Thanks for keeping in touch and thanks again for adopting from Cats of Salt Spring Rescue Society!

We continued our work on the north SSI black cat colony management project early this morning, bringing in 2 more cats from the colony. The second cat has an 'ear tip' - so this is one that we fixed last year and released. Once the kitty settles, we will try to check the microchip and see who it is. The first cat appears to be 8-10 months old - we call those older kittens "last year's model". Hopefully they will settle well in foster!

So far, that's 12 adult cats brought in this year from this colony, with 2 giving birth in care before we could spay them (producing a total of 7 kittens!). Last year, we brought in over 30 cats from the same colony.

What a difference for the cats, the birds / other wildlife in the area, the homeowners in the area (e.g. reduction of spraying from the unneutered males in the colony).

Want to help?

If you live in the area and see (or are feeding) cats from this colony (hint - most of them are fluffy and black), please reach out to us. We can trap, fix, and return the cats to you (if you would like them back!).

If you are interested in FOSTERING for us, we can definitely use more fosters. More fosters means more room to help more cats!

Thanks so much to our awesome volunteer team! And to the property owners in the area who are assisting us!

We LOVE receiving update notes and pics from our adopters.

Who remembers Ken & Barbie? This Tonkinese-mix sibling duo were surrendered to our care in the fall of 2023 as older, poorly socialized kittens. We worked with them for about a 6 weeks and were approached by Tanya, who was interested in adopting them together and continuing their socialization process.

Tanya happily reports that after 2 1/2 years, they have become a family! Puppy Emma, adopted in early 2025, was a huge help with their socialization, and the cats (now Jack and Stella) love Emma so much.

Thank you so much, Tanya, for giving this awesome pair of kitties such a wonderful home. And thanks to Emma for loving them so much! We are so thankful that you reached out and adopted from Cats of Salt Spring Rescue Society. Please keep the updates and pics coming!

Happy CATurday from our sweet Cannoli! She LOVES going fishing. Adopted in January 2026, this 12 year old girl is so happy to have someone to snuggle her and care for her after all of the years she spent running wild. Thank you Kate for giving her such a wonderful home and for keeping in touch!

Happy Friday to everyone from all of us here at Cats of Salt Spring. It's been a very busy week - culminating in a VERY BUSY DAY in Victoria yesterday.

We had THREE adult cats move into foster to adopt placement in Victoria - WHOA! We also stopped by for a visits with recently-adopted Matilda and Amelia (who are doing GREAT) and Lifetime Foster Sniffy (now JuniPurr) who is also in Victoria.

We had a great visit with our friends at Elk Lake Vet Hospital - where we stopped so Mango could say thank you to all of the amazing people there who took care of him over the past year (yes, it has been a year!).

Thanks so much to Mary for coming along for the LONG day yesterday. Winnie the Pooh was one of the cats taken to Victoria yesterday - and as Winnie says "It's so much more friendly with two".

Have a great weekend everyone - and watch for updates on our 10 recent intakes. Two of this bunch - Whittaker and Princess - will soon be listed for adoption!

Happy Sunday everyone! Just an update on our first 10 cats to come in from the north Salt Spring black cat colony trapping this year. Seven of the 10 have now been spayed / neutered, screened for FIV / FeLV, treated for fleas and parasites, and vaccinated. These cats are in foster and are starting to learn about trusting people! Some more quickly than others....it just takes time, consistency and patience. Check out Princess below (first pic)....she is ready to move into a foster-to-adopt space right now!

Three of the 10 trapped cats were already pregnant. Two of these pregnant cats gave birth before we could spay them and the 3rd will likely give birth in the next couple of days. Dealing with feral mom cats is an extra challenge - as these feral moms may kill their newborn babies if they feel threatened. We are doing our best to care for these new moms and monitor the moms and babies without being intrusive.

We can always use more foster homes. More foster homes mean that we have space to bring in more cats and kittens needing help. For more information about fostering with us, please reach out - [email protected] / 236-508-2287

Thanks to everyone who supports our work here on Salt Spring - financially, by fostering or adopting, or by volunteering with us. We are truly grateful.

Moving into foster-to-adopt on Thursday!

*****************
Happy CAT-urday from Winnie-the-Pooh!

This chocolate seal point Himalayan mix has been in our care for the past two months. Prior to coming to us, Winnie had been surviving by scrounging and begging for food on a local campground for at least a year. Thankfully, we were able to get him trapped and into our care.

On intake, Winnie was extremely filthy and matted. And very frightened! Over time, though, he has learned to trust us and now LOVES to snuggle and be held. It is clear that Winnie knew love at some point before in his life. Our veterinarian estimates that Winnie is approximately 3 years old.

The PURRfect home for Winnie would be with someone who has time to spend with him - bonding and building trust. Slow and steady will definitely win the race with this sweet guy, We will definitely do a month-long foster-to-adopt placement for the right adopter. Himalayan cats do need frequent brushing and grooming - so an adopter must be prepared for this. His coat is so lovely and soft now!

Winnie has been neutered, vaccinated (FVRCP plus rabies), microchipped, treated for fleas and parasites, and tested for FIV / FeLV (negative).

If you would like more information or would like to set up an appointment to meet Winnie at his foster home, please reach out - [email protected] / 236-508-2287

Winnie CAN'T WAIT to meet you! He's SO snuggly!

"We really can't thank you enough; you have made our lives very full!” - Cianna and Max

Happy FRIDAY everyone - we start the day with another great adoption update: Matilda & Amelia - ADOPTED.

These two young adult cats have been in foster-to-adopt placement with Cianna and Max in Victoria for the last month. And they have settled in SO WONDERFULLY!

Cianna and Max borrowed Matilda and Amelia's borrowed two large crates from us and worked the cats out at their own pace. The result? Secure and confident landings for both cats - they are both SO SNUGGLY !

Thanks so much, Cianna and Max, for giving the kitties the time they needed to settle. And thank you SO MUCH for adopting from Cats of Salt Spring Rescue Society.

We look forward to years of update photos!
