To conquer loose-leash walking, we need to take it one step at a time, and the very first one is the equipment you use.

Maren Bruun of Paw In Hand shares these three essentials to enjoying a loose-leash walk with your dog.

1️⃣Well-fitted harness: that is comfortable for the dog to wear.
2️⃣Long leash: Remember that it is important that you can safely and effectively handle it.
3️⃣Treat pouch with lots of treats: because there are plenty of things that compete for your attention!

We talk all about loose-leash walking at https://animalkind.ca/all-about-leash-walking/

WE NEED FOSTERS!! Kitten Season is in full swing and we need homes that are willing to keep the little ones safe and warm until adoption time!

What does fostering mean?
For kittens, we send them in pairs. The SPCA pays for everything, food, litter, toys, supplies and veterinary care.

Once the kittens are ready for spay/neuter (around 12 weeks) they are put up for adoption.

We get kittens of all ages, some with their moms, some need to be bottle fed, some are already weened.

If you are interested in fostering please give us a call at 250-537-2123 or email [email protected]

P.S. The wee seal point kitten and one of the floofy black kittens in this photo already have a pending adoption :)

Do you want the joy of having animals in your life without a long term commitment? If yes, then we have some opportunities for you!

The local Salt Spring Island Animal Care Centre is in need of fosters for various situations.

1) Kitten season is upon us and we are always looking for more fosters to join our cat/kitten network of fosters. We especially need people who are interested in helping kittens and kittens with mommas. We also can use cat fosters who can help adults and seniors.

2) Rabbits! We have had a lot of calls recently about stray rabbits being found on the island. Unfortunately, we are a cat only shelter and can't house rabbits so we would like to find a few foster homes who could take in rabbits temporarily until we can transfer them off island to one of the bigger centres when they have space.

3) Like rabbits, we can't house dogs at the local centre so could use a small network of temporary foster homes to take in dogs until we can transfer them to a bigger centre.

If you are interested in learning more about our foster program, please visit https://spca.bc.ca/ways-to-help/volunteer/foster/?utm_source=volunteer-page&utm_medium=promo&utm_campaign=volunteer&utm_content=foster-program-info or reach out to the local centre directly at [email protected]

We are saddened to report that a deceased cat was just brought in to the centre. He is a short haired sealpoint/tabby male found near the intersection of Cranberry and Old Divide Rd. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a tattoo or microchip so we cannot locate his family easily. If you possibly know who this guy could be, please reach out to the BCSPCA Salt Spring island animal care centre at 250-537-2123 or [email protected].

WE'RE BACK!!!!!

After a year hiatus, the BCSPCA Salt Spring Island Doggie Daycare is back again at the Saturday Market. Starting Saturday May 9, 2026 and running until Saturday September 5, 2026, our eager volunteers are ready to babysit your dog(s) while you explore the market. This one hour service is $20 with all money going directly to our local animal care centre.

We are also always looking for volunteers to help us out...the more volunteers we have, the more dogs we can keep happy and out of hot cars. If interested in helping, visit our centre during business hours (M-Th 11-4), stop by the doggie daycare area on Saturdays or feel free to fill out a volunteer application at https://app.betterimpact.com/PublicEnterprise/EnterpriseGvi?enterpriseGuid=3daf2b99-02b2-461d-872b-54cc0a82eaf8&gviGuid=a96e1752-4e6a-4c02-b308-15c329287b1c&searchUrl=https%253a%252f%252fapp.betterimpact.com%252fPublicEnterprise%252fEnterpriseSearch%253fEnterpriseGuid%253d3daf2b99-02b2-461d-872b-54cc0a82eaf8%2526SearchType%253dOrganization%2526SearchId%253d11949

The uncertainty of what happens when you leave your adorable pet at the groomers might be nerve-racking. And you are right! In an unregulated industry, who knows what goes on beyond closed doors?

Here are insider tips from Amy at Northern Noses Pet Services, to ask questions and make sure your groomer:

✓ Uses non-slip surfaces
✓ Have separate areas or times for cats and dogs
⚠️ Never leaves a pet alone on the grooming table
✓ Uses gentle handling, breaks and reward-based procedures
✓ Knows body language to identify signs of stress
⚠️ Stops the groom if it becomes too much for your pet
✓ Asks about your pet’s health and behaviour triggers
✓ Schedules more time for first visits and intake forms
✓ Can explain why a specific cut or service might not be right for your pet

Get your checklist and know what to ask:

Thanks to Amy at Northern Noses Pet Services for sharing these tips!

Dog pawrents, do you really know your doggy daycare? 🤔
Come inside Wild Tails in Nanaimo and see what to look for when choosing a dog daycare. When leaving your bestie for the day, pay attention to:

🐶 Dog grouping:
Group dogs by energy level, size, and play style
No more than 10 dogs per caregiver

🌳 Play areas:
Space to separate dogs into smaller groups
Enough space for dogs to hide and rest

😍 Daily care:
Includes exercise, social interaction and rest in a rotating schedule
Rest time in kennels with enough space for dogs to stand, lie down, and sit
Humane methods, such as treats and play, are used to handle and interact with the dogs

📝 Initial assessment
Intake assessments are done to learn the behaviour of each dog
Caregivers trained to understand dog body language
Gentle introduction to other dogs

Thanks to Talia and her team for giving us this inside look at Wild Tails Daycare!

Trusting someone with your dog is a big deal. When your dog walker takes the leash, you’re putting your dog's safety, comfort and wellbeing in their hands. Asking the right questions isn’t being “too much”, it’s being a caring dog guardian!

Abbey Smyth of Modern Dog Training shares 4 important questions to ask your dog walker:

1️⃣ How many dogs do they walk at a time?
2️⃣ How is your dog being transported?
3️⃣ What happens if a dog is lost or injured?
4️⃣ How will they communicate information about your dog's experience?

Get the safety checklist so you know the right questions to ask, compare options, and make the best choice for your pet. 👀 https://animalkind.ca/whos-taking-care-of-your-pet-safety-checklist/
