Fun Fact Friday 🐕

Dog owners often get more daily exercise than non-dog owners. Regular walks, outdoor play, and daily routines help keep both dogs and their people active. It’s a great reminder that caring for pets can benefit both animal and human well-being.

218 days 💔

That's how long Miss Phoebe has been waiting for her chance.

Phoebe came into our care on November 5, 2025, and since then she’s been patiently waiting for the right person—or rescue—to see past her stress and understand who she truly is.

Phoebe is a 3–8 year old Border Collie mix who is smart, loyal, friendly, and deeply devoted once she trusts you. She is spayed, vaccinated, and house-trained, and she has so much potential in the right environment. ❤️

However, Phoebe needs a very specific placement to succeed.

She is a true herding breed and has developed protective, overstimulated behaviours in the shelter environment. She may attempt to herd or nip unfamiliar people entering what she now views as her space. This is not aggression—it is instinct and fear in a stressful setting.

Because of this, Phoebe will need:
✨ An experienced Border Collie handler or rescue placement
✨ A calm, structured environment
✨ Slow, patient introductions to build trust safely
✨ A home with no children or dogs (cats are okay)

Once she feels safe, Phoebe’s loyal, intelligent, and affectionate personality shines through. She bonds deeply with her person and thrives when given guidance and understanding.

We know the right match is out there—someone who sees her not as a “problem,” but as a sensitive, intelligent dog who simply needs the right environment to feel secure and succeed.

Phoebe deserves her second chance. Please share to help us find her experienced foster, rescue, or forever home. 🐶💛

A heartfelt thank you to the Springfield Swans Club -Ontario for their generous donation of 10 handmade dog beds to St. Thomas Animal Services!

These cozy beds will help provide comfort and a sense of home for the dogs in our care while they wait for their forever families. Donations like these make a real difference in the lives of shelter animals, and we're incredibly grateful for the time, effort, and kindness that went into creating each one.

Thank you for helping our shelter residents rest a little easier. ❤️

Update: Maximus is back with his loving family
FOUND: This guy was picked up by St Thomas Police as a stray on the corner of Highbury Ave and South Edgeware Road. They originally thought they recognized the dog, but it's a different dog. This one has a choke collar around it's neck, is microchipped but the chip is not registered.

Now THAT’S what we call an upgrade! 🐱

We’re excited to reveal one of the many features of our new Animal Services facility: spacious new cat and kitten condos designed to provide a more comfortable, enriching environment for animals in our care.

With significantly more condo space than our previous shelter, we’ll be able to expand our capacity and help even more cats and kittens while they wait for their forever homes. These larger accommodations give our feline residents more room to stretch, play, relax, and simply be cats.

This is just one of the many improvements that will help us provide a higher level of care for the animals who come through our doors.

We can’t wait to welcome our first residents! ❤️🐾

Adoption Update: Toad ❤️

One of the best parts of our job is hearing from adopters years after their pets leave the shelter.

In 2021, after spotting Toad in a Facebook post, his adopter immediately reached out to learn more. A meeting was arranged, sparks flew, and within days Toad was heading home.

Since then, Toad has become much more than a pet. He’s been a hiking buddy, a swimming companion, a clown at a children’s birthday party, and a source of comfort during life’s difficult moments. While he’s happy to spend his days curled up at home, he’s always ready for the next adventure when the opportunity arises.

Perhaps the most touching part of Toad’s story is this:

“I have loved many dogs in my life and would never speak poorly of any of them, but Toad is my soul pet. Somewhere along the way, I stopped being sure whether I rescued him or he rescued me.”

Thank you for sharing your story with us. Seeing animals thrive in loving homes is what it’s all about.

We are so happy for you, Toad and family! 🐾

Fun Fact Friday 🦨

Baby skunks are called kits. Like many young animals, kits stay close to their mother while they learn important survival skills. If you see young wildlife, it’s best to give them space—mom is usually nearby.

A milestone moment for the City of St. Thomas! 🐾✂️

Today, we officially cut the ribbon on the new Animal Services building, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for animal care in our community.

Over the coming weeks, staff and shelter animals will begin moving into the new facility, which will provide enhanced spaces, improved services, and a better experience for both animals and the people who care for them.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this project a reality. We look forward to welcoming the community into this incredible new space soon!
