Most dental disease occurs below the gum line where it’s hard to see. Here are a few warning signs to watch for in your dogs & cats:
▪️Bad breath
▪️Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
▪️Discolored, broken, or missing teeth
▪️Drooling excessively, dropping food, or pawing at the mouth
▪️Refusing to eat or hesitating to chew

What can we do to maintain their smile:
▪️Daily Brushing: Use a soft, pet-specific toothbrush and toothpaste (never use human toothpaste, as it is toxic).
▪️Dental Chews & Diets: Look for products carrying the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal of acceptance.
▪️Professional Cleanings: Schedule comprehensive oral health assessments with your vet. These cleanings are performed under general anesthesia to safely scale and polish below the gumline and perform dental X-rays

It’s true that cats often receive less medical attention than dogs, largely because they are masters of hiding discomfort. What looks like a cat simply “slowing down” or enjoying the quiet life of a senior is frequently a sign of silent struggle.

In fact, many aging felines deal with osteoarthritis—a painful joint condition that often goes undiagnosed. Because cats are both predators and prey, they instinctively mask their pain, making it easy for owners to overlook.

Subtle signs that your cat may be in pain:

Reduced Agility: Hesitating before jumping or using “steps” to get onto furniture they used to leap onto easily.

Changes in Movement: A stiff gait or a slight limp that disappears once they “warm up.”

Social Withdrawal: Spending more time alone or becoming irritable when handled.

Grooming & Hygiene: A scruffy coat (due to pain when reaching back) or “accidents” outside the litter box because the sides are too high to climb.

Appetite Shifts: Less interest in food, especially if they have to crouch or stand for long periods to eat.

Despite their reputation for being “low maintenance,” cats require proactive care to thrive in their golden years.

If you’ve noticed even slight shifts in your cat’s routine, a wellness exam with your veterinarian can help them get back to their comfortable, playful selves.

Over the years, we have been fortunate to have a dedicated team of Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) available to assist you both by phone and at our front desk. As our practice grows, we are shifting our focus to ensure our RVTs can dedicate their specialized skills to what they do best: providing high-quality, hands-on clinical care for your pets.

To help us maintain this level of service, we have expanded our front-desk team! Please join us in welcoming our newest member of , the lovely Lorna!

While Lorna is new to veterinary medicine, she brings extensive experience in client relations and patient coordination. Her eagerness to learn, combined with her genuine compassion and organizational skills, makes her a perfect fit for our team.

We appreciate your patience as Lorna settles into her new role. Please note that phone inquiries may take slightly longer than usual during this transition, and medically complex questions will require a scheduled call-back from a technician or doctor.

Lorna looks forward to meeting you and your pets soon!

Salt and other chemical ice melting agents are harsh to sensitive paws and can be toxic if consumed. When taking your dog(s) out for a walk this winter, be sure to wipe down their feet, legs, and belly to remove salt or other ice melting agents that may cling to your pet along the way. This can help reduce irritation to the paws/skin or risk of your pet licking chemicals off their feet/fur. Other alternatives include booties, suspenders, or socks (if your pup will tolerate them).
