Tick season is here—learn how to keep your pet safe from tick-borne diseases 🐾

Tick-borne diseases aren’t just a “summer nuisance.” They can become serious, even life-threatening, for pets if not caught early. Conditions like Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis can cause symptoms ranging from fever and lethargy to joint pain, loss of appetite, and in severe cases, organ damage.

Here’s the good news: prevention is highly effective.
✔️ Keep your pet on a veterinarian-recommended tick prevention year-round
✔️ Check your pet daily, especially after walks in wooded or grassy areas
✔️ Remove ticks promptly and properly
✔️ Keep your yard trimmed and minimize tall grass and brush

How do tick preventatives work?
Most veterinary-recommended preventatives either repel ticks or kill them after they attach—before they have time to transmit disease. Some are topical (applied to the skin) and spread across your pet’s coat, while others are oral medications that work through the bloodstream. In both cases, the goal is the same: stop ticks quickly and reduce the risk of disease transmission.

If your pet is showing unusual signs—fatigue, limping, decreased appetite—don’t wait. Early treatment makes a big difference.

❄️ SEVERE COLD WIND WARNING – NEW BRUNSWICK ❄️

Environment Canada has issued a yellow cold warning for all of New Brunswick, with very cold wind chills expected from Saturday into Sunday especially Saturday morning through Sunday morning. Wind chills could feel between -30 °C and -37 °C, making conditions dangerous for people and animals. This extreme cold puts everyone at risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

These conditions mean that even brief exposure can be hazardous. Frostbite can occur quickly on exposed skin in very low wind chills.

🐾 PET SAFETY REMINDER 🐾
• Outdoor cats: Please bring them inside during this cold spell. Cats are especially vulnerable to extreme cold and wind chill.
• Dogs: Limit outdoor time to only what’s necessary for bathroom breaks. Keep walks very short and watch for signs of cold stress (shivering, lifting paws, reluctance to walk).
• Paws & protection: After going outside, wipe your dog’s paws to remove snow, ice, and road salt that can irritate.
• Signs to watch for: Watch for shivering, lethargy, pale or cold extremities. These can be signs of hypothermia or frostbite.

🌬️ GENERAL SAFETY REMINDERS 🌬️
• Dress in layers with a wind-resistant outer layer and cover exposed skin if you must go out.
• Keep an eye on forecasts and alerts, and check conditions before going outdoors.
• If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pets.

Stay warm and keep your whole family safe including the furry members! 🧤❤️🐶🐱

🎆 New Year’s Pet Safety Reminder 🐾

As we celebrate tonight, please remember that New Year’s Eve can be stressful for pets.

• Fireworks can be frightening — keep pets indoors, away from windows, and in a quiet, secure area.
• Keep garbage, treats, alcohol, and party items safely out of reach.
• Be mindful of decorations like confetti and streamers, which can be dangerous if chewed or swallowed.
• Many celebration foods and drinks are toxic to pets — avoid sharing human treats.
• Help anxious pets by setting up a calm, cozy retreat with familiar items or soothing music.
• Make sure collars, ID tags, and microchip info are current in case a pet gets spooked.

Let’s ring in the New Year safely—for everyone in the family 🐶🐱
