I swear every single one of these made perfect sense in context. 😂

Dog training is a very serious profession.

Show me your dog’s happy place. đŸ–€

Mine would choose the beach every fu***ng time.

Where’s yours happiest?

And I want pictures. 👇😂

I swear, owning a dog shouldn’t be this fu***ng complicated.

Love your dog. Train your dog. Set boundaries. Screw up sometimes. Learn something. Keep going.

You’re doing better than the internet would have you believe. đŸ–€

Is your dog muzzle trained?

If the answer is no because “my dog would never bite,” you’re missing the point
Muzzles aren’t just for aggressive dogs. Injuries happen. Emergencies happen. And even the gentlest dog can use their teeth when they’re scared or in pain.

I’d much rather teach my dog to wear one when we don’t need it than introduce it for the first time on one of the worst days of their life.

So... is yours muzzle trained?

Your dog can know exactly what you’re asking and still not be able to give it to you.

There were pigeons everywhere when I took this picture.

And I wasn’t interested in whether this dog could sit.

I was watching whether he could stay connected to me while all that s**t was happening behind him.

Because I see this constantly in training.
You tell me, “He KNOWS this.”
And you’re right. He probably does.

But then we change the environment and suddenly you’ve got a completely different dog on the end of your leash.
That’s where knowing how to teach a dog a handful of commands isn’t enough.

I need to be able to read the dog in front of me.

Can he notice the pigeons and come back to me? Can he still think? Is he getting more interested in them or less? Is this environment something he can handle right now, or am I about to ask for something he isn’t ready to give me?

That’s the work you don’t necessarily see in this photo.

You see a dog looking at me
I see a dog surrounded by pigeons who is still able to choose me.

And that tells me exactly where I can go next.

That’s dog training.

Not running through the same exercises everywhere you go.

Knowing what the dog in front of you is telling you and knowing what the f**k to do with that information.

🎉 Okay, we’ve got a new team to introduce!

Meet Zach & Paisley, the newest Service Dog Team in Training with Wells Canine! 🐕‍đŸŠș

These two officially joined me this month, and I’m pretty damn excited to have them here.

Over the next few months, we’ll be working on strengthening their partnership, sharpening Paisley’s skills, building confidence and reliability in public, and making sure the two of them can work together as a solid team wherever life takes them.

Service dog training is a whole lot more than teaching a dog a list of behaviours. It’s about building a team that can communicate, adapt and trust each other when it actually matters.

And these two are ready to do the work. đŸ’Ș

So, WHOOP WHOOP 🎉 Welcome Zach & Paisley to Wells Canine!

You’ll definitely be seeing more of these two around here. đŸ–€đŸŸ

Your dog doing something perfectly in your kitchen doesn’t mean you’re done training it.
Because your kitchen is easy.

Then you take that same dog somewhere with people, dogs, smells, noise, movement and a hundred other things competing for their attention, and suddenly the thing you thought was solid looks a whole lot less solid.

That doesn’t mean the training failed.
It means you just found out what your dog can handle here, today, under these conditions.

And this is where knowing how to train an exercise and knowing how to handle your dog become two very different things.
I don’t want you standing there trying to remember what I told you to do the last time something went sideways.

I want you able to look at the dog in front of you, figure out what they need from you, and know what to do next.

Because I’m not always going to be standing beside you.

And your dog is definitely going
to keep throwing new s**t at you. 😂
If that’s the kind of handler you want to become, keep watching. I’ve got something coming for you. 👀

Your dogs reactivity is making your world pretty damn small

You know how much of your life you're arranging around your dog's reactivity. The walks you don't take. The places you don't go. The mental calculation when you see another dog coming and you're already wondering how bad this is about to get.

I understand why you've adapted. You had to.
But adapting to the problem doesn't mean you have to live with it forever.

I want you choosing where you walk your dog because that's where you want to go, not because it's the safest bet that you won't see another dog.

If reactivity has been making your world smaller, DM me TRAINING.

You and I will look at what's actually happening with your dog and build a training plan around where you are now and where you want to be.
