What Is Your Dog Trying to Tell You?
Your dog is not giving you a hard time. They may be having a hard time.

When a dog is barking, pulling, jumping, pacing, shutting down, reacting, chewing, or unable to settle, it is easy to focus only on the behaviour we want to stop. But behaviour is communication.

Your dog may be telling you they are overwhelmed, overexcited, frustrated, unsure, under-stimulated, lacking structure, or simply unsure what is expected of them.

That does not mean we ignore unwanted behaviour or let our dogs run the house. It means we look at the dog in front of us with both compassion and honesty.

Training helps us do more than correct a moment. It helps us build a foundation. We teach dogs what yes means, what no means, what good choices look like, and how to calm themselves within clear, fair boundaries.

A safe, comfortable place to stay matters. And for many dogs, the right kind of structure can make their stay even better.

At Martindale Kennels, our boarding enrichment program is built around the individual dog in front of us, not a one-size-fits-all, social free-for-all approach.

Some dogs thrive with more movement and purposeful activity. Some need help settling into a new environment. Some are social, some prefer space, and some need a carefully managed plan to feel safe, confident, and understood. That is why we look at each dog’s energy, comfort level, behaviour, and needs before deciding what their stay should look like.

Our goal is not to keep dogs busy just for the sake of it. It is to provide thoughtful care, structured activity where appropriate, calm downtime, and staff who know how to read the dog in front of them.

Why the F@ck Does My Dog Do That?

If a knock, doorbell, or guest arriving turns your dog into a spinning, barking, door-rushing mess, you are not alone.

In Renee’s newest video inside The Martindale Pack, she shows a practical way to interrupt that rehearsed front-door chaos and give a dog a new job. Instead of expecting a highly wound-up dog to stay frozen in one spot while all the action is happening, Renee redirects the energy safely away from the entryway with food, movement, and a clear focus point.

The goal is not to keep rehearsing the reaction you do not want. It is to teach your dog what to do instead.

A few important reminders: use food only when your dogs can be around it safely; separate or crate dogs that may compete over food; and use a leash when more control is needed. For serious reactivity, aggression, or bite-risk concerns, the plan and safety equipment need to be tailored to the dog in front of you.

A high-energy dog is not a bad dog. They are often a dog whose needs have not been fully understood yet.

Before bringing a dog home or when trying to understand the dog already in your home it is important to look beyond breed labels and cute photos. Consider their energy level, exercise needs, mental needs, instincts, confidence, age, environment, and the kind of structure they need to feel settled.

When physical and mental energy has nowhere productive to go, it can show up as frustration, boredom, destructive behaviour, reactivity, anxiety, or what people sometimes call aggression. That does not mean your dog is “too much.” It means they may need clearer direction, more purposeful outlets, and a plan that makes sense for them.

Training is not just about telling a dog what not to do. It is about teaching them what to do.

A well-rounded dog learns the difference between yes and no. They learn what good choices look like. They learn that calm behaviour, boundaries, and clear communication create more freedom, not less. They understand the assignment because someone has taken the time to teach it, instead of leaving them to figure out the world on their own.

And it is never too late to build that foundation. Whether you have a high-drive working breed, a busy adolescent, a dog struggling with confidence, or a dog whose behaviour feels overwhelming, training can help create a calmer mindset and better decisions in real life.

At Martindale Kennels, report cards are an amazing way for us to communicate exactly how each dog is truly doing during their stay!

A new environment can feel overwhelming for some dogs. We do not want dogs spending their time anxious, stressed, refusing meals, or unable to settle. Our goal is to help build confidence, avoid injuries or illness and create a calmer mindset, one that gives each dog the best opportunity to relax, engage, and enjoy their time with us.

We pay attention to the dog in front of us: their confidence, ability to settle, engagement, individual needs, and the little wins that matter. Then we share that insight with you.

Your dog is not just another kennel number. They are an individual with their own personality, comfort level, and plan.
