🚨🐕A new step for first-time boarding at Martindale Kennels.

Before a new dog stays with us, they will now complete a First Stay Assessment with our training team.

This is a four-hour appointment and is $50. It gives us the time to get to know the dog in front of us, observe how they respond to a new environment, and understand the support they may need before their upcoming stay.

Not every dog walks into a new facility feeling confident and we do not expect them to. This assessment helps us create a clearer plan for dogs who are nervous, fearful, reactive, anxious, or simply new to the boarding experience.

At the end of the appointment, you will receive a First Stay Assessment report card with feedback and recommendations for your dog’s upcoming stay.

Our goal is simple: no guessing, no one-size-fits-all expectations, and a better boarding experience for the dog and the owner.

Trainer Tip: Calm Is a Skill
A calm dog is not always a tired dog.

We are often told that a busy dog needs more walks, more fetch, more toys, and more stimulation. Exercise matters but if your dog needs to be entertained every second of the day, they may not have learned how to settle.

The ability to relax while nothing exciting is happening is a skill. It is not neglect. It is not boring your dog. It is teaching them that they do not need to react to every sound, follow you from room to room, demand the next activity, or stay switched on all day.

A dog with an off-switch can rest, regulate their emotions, and handle everyday life with more confidence.

TRUTH BOMB: Your dog is not spoiled. They are not stubborn. They are confused.

If your dog gets the same response whether they are calm, barking, jumping, pulling, or ignoring you, how are they supposed to know what you actually want?

A clear “yes” tells your dog they made the right choice. A fair “no” tells them that choice does not work and gives them the information they need to try something else.

Without clear communication, dogs are left guessing. And that uncertainty can create anxiety, frustration, and chaos.

Setting boundaries is not mean. It is one of the kindest things you can do for your dog.
