Say hello to Maverick! 🐾

Maverick recently came in for his annual wellness exam, his first one since he was just a puppy! It’s always amazing to see how much our patients grow and change, and Maverick was no exception.

From adorable puppy to the most handsome adult he is today, he’s doing great and impressed us with how well he’s grown up. His exam went smoothly, and he continues to be a happy, healthy boy!

We’ve included a throwback photo of Maverick as a puppy alongside a recent photo so you can see just how much he’s changed over the past year.

Regular annual exams are an important part of keeping pets like Maverick feeling their best, catching changes early helps keep them healthy for years to come.

If your pet is due for their yearly check-up, give us a call to book an appointment, we’d love to see them! 🐶

🐛 Heartworm Awareness: What You’re Seeing Under the Microscope

This fascinating (and a little unsettling) video shows microfilariae, the early larval stage of heartworm, viewed under the microscope. These tiny organisms circulate in the bloodstream of infected pets and are a key part of the heartworm life cycle.

Heartworm disease is transmitted through mosquito bites. Once inside a pet, these parasites don’t stay “micro” for long. Over time, they can grow into long worms that live in the heart, lungs, and surrounding blood vessels. Left untreated, this can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening disease.

What makes heartworm especially concerning is that early infection often shows no obvious signs. By the time symptoms like coughing, fatigue, weight loss, or difficulty breathing appear, the disease may already be advanced.

The good news? Heartworm is preventable.

✔️ Monthly preventatives
✔️ Annual testing to ensure you dog is free of heartworm and tick borne diseases.

Protecting your pet is simple compared to treating infection, and prevention truly makes all the difference.

If you have questions about heartworm testing or prevention options, feel free to reach out to the clinic. We’re happy to help keep your pets protected all year long ❤️

Meet Poe! 🐍

Poe, a beautiful ball python, came in for her annual check-up with Dr. Rachel back in April. She did wonderfully during her visit and gave us a great opportunity to make sure she’s staying healthy, well-hydrated, and thriving in her care.

Annual exams for reptiles like ball pythons are an important part of preventative health care. Even when everything looks normal on the outside, these visits allow us to check weight trends, assess body condition, review husbandry (like temperature, humidity, and enclosure setup), and catch any early concerns before they become bigger issues.

Poe was calm, and absolutely stunning as always. A great reminder of how unique and fascinating reptile patients can be!

If you share your home with an exotic pet like Poe, regular wellness exams help ensure they stay on track year after year. 🩺

Have questions about reptile care or your pet’s next check-up? We’re always happy to help!

☀️ Sunday Safety Tip: Water Safety for Pets 🐾💦

As the warmer weather continues, many pets are getting more opportunities to join in on outdoor adventures near pools, lakes, ponds, and even backyard sprinklers. While water play can be fun and refreshing, it’s important to remember that water can also present real safety risks for pets.

Not all pets are natural swimmers, and even those who are comfortable in water can become tired very quickly. Cold water, strong currents, slippery edges, and unexpected drop-offs can all make swimming more difficult and dangerous than it looks. Always supervise your pet closely whenever they are near water, this includes shallow areas, as accidents can happen in just a few seconds.

If your pet is going to be around open water or on a boat, a properly fitted life jacket is strongly recommended. This is especially important for puppies, senior pets, small breeds, flat-faced breeds, or any pet who is not a confident swimmer. A life jacket provides extra buoyancy and often includes a handle, making it much easier to safely guide your pet out of the water if needed.

After any swim or water play, rinse your pet thoroughly to remove chlorine, salt, algae, or bacteria that may be present in the water. Make sure to dry them well afterward, paying close attention to the ears, as moisture trapped inside can increase the risk of ear infections. If your pet swims frequently, regular ear checks can help catch any early signs of irritation.

Lastly, always provide access to fresh drinking water during outdoor activities so pets are not tempted to drink from lakes or pools, which can upset their stomach or expose them to harmful bacteria.

A little extra awareness goes a long way in keeping summer water adventures safe, fun, and worry-free for both pets and their people 🐶🐱💙

Laser Therapy for Pets: Healing From the Inside Out ✨

Laser therapy (also known as therapeutic laser or photobiomodulation) is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to help stimulate healing in the body. It’s a drug-free way to support comfort and recovery in many of our furry, scaly, and feathered patients.

When applied to targeted areas, the light energy helps increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and encourage cell repair. Most pets find the experience relaxing, many even settle in or fall asleep during their sessions just like Lux in this photo!

🐾 What can laser therapy help with?
It’s commonly used to support:

Arthritis and joint pain
Post-surgical healing
Soft tissue injuries (sprains, strains, wounds)
Ear infections and inflammation
Dental or oral discomfort
Chronic conditions that cause pain or stiffness

🐾 What does a session look like?
Treatments are quick, typically only a few minutes per area. There’s no shaving required in most cases, and no sedation is needed. Your pet simply relaxes while the laser is gently applied to the affected region.

🐾 Why we love it
Laser therapy is a great addition to a treatment plan because it works alongside medications, rehabilitation, and other therapies to improve comfort and mobility.

If you think your pet could benefit from laser therapy, feel free to reach out to the clinic, we’d be happy to chat and see if it’s a good fit for their needs. 💙
