Tuesday, September 22 is officially the first day of Fall. Let's talk about some of the changes you may see in your flock with the season change.

One of the most notable is a decrease in egg production. This is due to a decrease in daylight - as the amount we see daily decreases, so does a hens egg production. Adding a full spectrum daylight bulb to your coop on a timer to come on before dawn can be enough to keep the girls laying as long as you ensure that including the natural daylight outdoors they have a minimum of 14 hours of daylight. Chickens need 14 to 16 hours of light per day to maintain consistent, peak egg production.

You may have a double whammy on that decrease if you also have a hen going through a fall molt. The good news is, you can support your hen through her molt by providing extra protein.

Meal worms are an excellent source of protein to use as a supplement or feed a higher protein commercial food such as turkey duck and goose blends or a chick starter formula.
