🇨🇦 Celebrating Canada Day Safely With Your Pups 🇨🇦
Happy Canada Day to all of our valued clients and families!
Today is a wonderful day to gather with family, enjoy the beautiful summer weather, and celebrate together.
However, with today's intense heat and evening celebrations, keeping our furry family members safe takes a little extra planning.
To ensure your dog has a comfortable, stress-free holiday, please keep these essential safety tips in mind:
🐾 Manage the Peak Heat
The midday sun can overwhelm a dog quickly. Consider keeping your pup indoors in the air conditioning during the hottest afternoon hours. If they are joining you in the backyard, ensure they have a fully shaded retreat and constant access to fresh, cool water.
🐾 Test the Pavement
Before heading out for a community walk, place the back of your hand firmly on the pavement or asphalt for seven seconds. If it is uncomfortable for you, it is hot enough to blister and burn their paw pads. Stick to grassy routes or save the walks for later in the evening.
⚠️ Know the Signs of Heat Stroke
Because dogs cannot sweat the way we do, it is vital to recognize when they are in distress.
Watch closely for: Frantic, unceasing panting or labored breathing, extreme lethargy, weakness, or stumbling, bright red or unusually dark gums
If you notice any of these signs, move your dog into a cool indoor space immediately, offer cool water (never ice-cold), and contact an emergency veterinarian right away.
🎆 Prepare for Evening Fireworks
The loud bangs and bright flashes of holiday fireworks can cause severe anxiety, even in typically calm dogs.
🐾 Update ID Tags Now: More dogs go missing on days with fireworks than almost any other day of the year. Double-check that your dog's collar is secure and that their ID tags and microchip contact information are completely up to date just in case they panic and bolt.
🐾 Secure the Home: Keep your dog safely indoors well before dusk. Ensure all windows, doors, and gates are securely locked to prevent an escape.
🐾 Create a Safe Haven: Set up a quiet room or a cozy crate area with their favorite blankets. Turn on the air conditioning, a fan, or the TV to help drown out the external booms.
🐾 Time Your Potty Breaks: Take your dog out for their final bathroom break before it gets dark so they don't have to be outside when the displays begin.
