Crazy Coop House Mom checking in:
Some pics from the farm this week. Late this summer we joined Loop Resource - Atlantic so the animals are getting lots of variety of produce.
Scott got some new attachments for the skid steer and practiced using them so we have a whole new field cleared and wider walking areas and cleaner fence lines.
Things are coming along, slowly but nicely.
We’ll have new pics showing the final move - the rabbits are finally joining the Pictou County farm.
It’s nice to finally have progress to report. ❤️

Itchy? Scratchy? Mangy feathers?

Let’s talk mites and lice

Mites - are small spider- like parasites usually hard to see from afar and some types live within the coop, come out to feed at night.

Common indications of mites may be pale combs, weight loss, anemia, and reduced egg productivity.

Lice - are small tan insects that live on the chicken at all times, feeding on feathers, skin debris, and sometimes blood. Lice are usually visible through the feathers.

Common indications of lice are usually feather damage, itchiness and irritation. Lice also lay eggs and small white clusters on the base of the feathers called
Nits.

Prevention - Mixing Diatomaceous Earth or wood ash (20%) with Peat moss (40%) and construction sand (40%). Makes a great preventative solution.

Treatment - while in an active infestation I use Dr. Doom poultry Spray, or Disvap Gold Spray. And/ or Ivermectin injectable (applied topically).

Treatments must catch the egg cycle. Treat once, then repeat every two weeks for a total of three treatments over six weeks. If the infestation persists, continue treatment and monitoring as needed.
