We are re-imagining no-kill rescue by operating Canada’s largest cat sanctuary, an adoption centre, a full-service non-profit animal hospital + urgent care, and thrift stores. The Regional Animal Protection Society runs the largest cat sanctuary in North America, an adoption centre, a full-service animal hospital, two thrift stores and hopes to open a dog sanctuary in the near future.

​In addition to caring for your furry family members, the ​RAPS Animal Hospital exists to provide medical services for the animals in the care of the Regional Animal Protection Society. RAPS operates the RAPS Cat Sanctuary, an adoption centre, a fostering network and three social enterprise Thrift Stores.

Kati’s volunteer foster maternity ward is HOPPING with babies! 💚💙

Mama Esme’s five kittens turn two weeks old on Saturday, while Mama Panther’s littles are already four weeks old. And in the sweetest twist, Esme has “adopted” one of Panther’s babies who was struggling. 🥹💚

Have you people learned nothing?

Let me explain.

You might get a kitten who hisses at you.

Spits at you.

Growls at you.

Runs away from you.

Or occasionally decides to launch themselves directly at you.

Very welcoming.

You may put down a perfectly good meal and get stared at like you’ve personally insulted their ancestors.

They may refuse to eat.

They may hide.

They may spend hours watching you from the shadows, silently judging every decision you’ve ever made.

And then there’s Churu.

Ah.

Churu changes everything.

Suddenly the terrifying little goblin is willing to negotiate.

One lick.

Maybe a head scratch.

Another lick.

Maybe you’ve earned the privilege of existing nearby.

Don’t get too comfortable.

You’re still being evaluated.

Then, just when you think you’re making progress…

THE CHAOS BEGINS.

Food gets everywhere.

Litter gets everywhere.

Somehow there is litter in the food and food in the litter.

They walk through wet food.

Then walk across everything.

They climb.

They knock things over.

They scream.

They roll around in the litter box.

And sometimes they throw their entire body into dinner like they’re competing for a gold medal in Extreme Wet Food Body Slamming.

And p**p?

Let’s just say they have a very loose interpretation of where p**p belongs.

Then one day, something strange happens.

The kitten who used to hide comes out.

The one who hissed at you starts watching you without hissing.

The one who wouldn’t let you near them starts playing.

And suddenly you realize…

You’ve been chosen.

Not the other way around.

You didn’t rescue them.

They rescued themselves a human.

I know because Foster Mum rescued me.

I was feral.

I hissed.

I growled.

I lunged.

I had opinions.

Many opinions.

Ken was so terrified of me that he used to bring the broom when he had to clean my cage.

Foster Mum kept coming back.

Eventually I decided she was acceptable staff.

Mostly because she had Churu.

So yes, fostering can be messy.

It can be frustrating.

You might get judged approximately 47 times a day.

But you also get to watch a terrified little feral kitten discover that maybe humans aren't completely useless.

And then they find a forever home.

That’s the job.

You provide the safe place.

They provide the chaos.

Everyone has responsibilities.

So if RAPS needs fosters…

Maybe consider opening your home to one of these tiny hissy, spitty, judgmental little disasters.

Just remember:

Bring Churu.

And good luck.

You’re going to need it.

On October 6, our Cat Sanctuary was delighted to welcome a wonderful group of UBC Sauder School of Business student volunteers as part of Sauder Gives Back! 💚

Organized by the Commerce Undergraduate Society, this annual week-long initiative brings together BCom students, faculty, staff, and alumni to volunteer with organizations across Vancouver, creating meaningful connections and lasting community impact.

We’re so grateful to these students for choosing to spend some of their time helping our feline residents! Their enthusiasm, generosity, and willingness to give back make a real difference in the lives of the cats who call RAPS home. 🐱💚
