We are re-imagining no-kill rescue by operating Canada’s largest cat sanctuary, an adoption centre, a full-service animal hospital + urgent care, and multiple thrift stores. The Regional Animal Protection Society runs the largest cat sanctuary in North America, an adoption centre, a full-service animal hospital, two thrift stores and hopes to open a dog sanctuary in the near future.

In addition

to caring for your furry family members, the RAPS Animal Hospital exists to provide medical services for the animals in the care of the Regional Animal Protection Society. RAPS operates the RAPS Cat Sanctuary, an adoption centre, a fostering network and three social enterprise Thrift Stores.

Meet Bumbu, your future professional snuggle partner! We are accepting adoption applications for this handsome, approximately 3-year-old hunk-of-burning-love 🐾✨

Bumbu was trapped by our rescue team as a frightened, unneutered stray, but beneath his shy exterior lies a complete sweetheart. Thanks to our care team and the staff at RAPS Animal Hospital + Urgent Care he’s now neutered, fully healed from a nasty tail abscess, and ready to start his next chapter!

While he’s still a bit nervous about being picked up, Bumbu simply can't resist a good cuddle session. He’s a quieter guy who thrives on gentle affection and love... and he's eager to settle into a safe, warm home. He seems to get on well with the other cats and kittens in our care and would likely enjoy a kitty companion in his new home. 🏡

Ready to make Bumbu part of your family? Click the link in our bio to apply today!

In this week’s blog post, volunteer Brigid Coult introduces handsome, 7-year-old Thor. 🐾

“Thor (aka Theo) has been on the RAPS files since last summer when he was rescued from potential convenience-euthanasia. You could understand why a start like that might leave a cat rather anxious about life...

He had loving care from a foster-mom who convinced him that humans weren't all bad - but the ups and downs of his gut health have made it so that Sanctuary life and daily access to the med staff seem to be his best option and he's now making the Single Wide his home.

Lead photo by Wenda Nairn, who still loves and visits him regularly. Thanks, Wenda!”

We are accepting adoption applications for Friday - a 1-year-old, sweet, shy & quiet girl 🐈‍⬛

Here is what her fosterer says about her:

"Friday is a beautiful little tuxedo girl with a white bib, tiny white toes, and an extra-sweet face. She is very shy and will dart away when approached, so she needs an adopter who understands how to calmly and gently approach shy cats. She is on a gentle, gradual journey toward trust and is learning to feel comfortable at her own pace. Her progress has been very encouraging, and she has already made meaningful strides in building confidence, including gradually approaching and staying closer to her humans.

She is very curious about her surroundings and likes to stay in the same room as her people. Friday enjoys looking out the window, relaxing in her fluffy bed, and napping during the day. She will accept pets only when Temptations treats are involved, and when she does, she leans into your hand and sometimes flops over for pets.

Friday is playful and full of personality, loving wand toys, chasing her toys, and getting zoomies. She uses her litter box perfectly and loves meal time. She would be a wonderful match for someone experienced with shy cats, especially if there’s another friendly cat in the home to help her feel more comfortable. She will need a patient adopter who understands that her trust may develop gradually, but that every small step is meaningful. A calm, consistent home will give Friday the best chance to continue blossoming."

Friday is currently in foster care. Please complete an adoption application. Strong applicants will be contacted to arrange a meet and greet.

Sponsor Me Wednesday – Eli 🐾

Sweet Eli is one of our Sanctuary icons, much loved by staff, volunteers and visitors alike. Nominally a purebred Ragdoll, we think there are other genetic aspects – his colouring is Himalayan rather than Ragdoll, and he has the strabismus (crossed eyes) common in Siamese and Himalayan cats. He was surrendered for aggression (not usually a Ragdoll trait) and is lovingly known around the Sanctuary as Pee-li, since he persists in marking his space.

We have found his aggression to be minimal, as long as you don’t make him do something he doesn’t want to – in common with most cats and a lot of humans! He is a regular gate-greeter on visitor days and so keen on accessing treats that he will sometimes knock the container out of a visitor’s hand. Inside the double-wide, they had to change the latch on the med-cage door, because Eli would break in to access the tasty stuff that disguises med. At coffee-break, he is often one of the cats lap-hopping for attention.

Our sweet boy is aging now, and is being treated for kidney disease, but he persists in seeking attention and love.

Happy National Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! 🧡🐈

With their fiery coats, oversized personalities, and an impressive ability to act like they personally own the place, our ginger cats are keeping us thoroughly entertained. 🧡

At the moment we only have two orangies at the Adoption Centre - Spaghettio and Ravioli. Ravioli is being adopted with his non-orange sibling, Beefaroni and going home this week! Spaghettio still seeks his forever people... and you'll find plenty of orange cats at the sanctuary!

Here’s to the orange ones: equal parts adorable, chaotic, and convinced they’re in charge. 🐾😂

🐾 Yesterday was hospital day for the boys 🐾

A few of our beloved Adoption Centre & Sanctuary residents checked themselves into the RAPS Animal Hospital + Urgent Care yesterday today. 😹

Jupiter & Pluto went in for their neuters, because apparently being handsome, wobbly little troublemakers wasn’t enough. ✂️😂

And legendary Little John had a bump on his rear end removed. We’re hoping it’s nothing serious and that his bum gets a clean bill of health! 🍑🐱

They’re all in the very best hands with our amazing medical team at RAPS Animal Hospital + Urgent Care and are now back at the RAPS Adoption Centre & RAPS Cat Sanctuary recovering from their procedures ❤️

Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day. We have lost some precious souls this year at the Sanctuary 🌈🐈‍⬛🐈🌈

“Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….”
