Call of the Wild: S1 Ep 3+4

A 2-part episode celebrating the avalanche dogs of Revelstoke Mountain Resort and the remarkable story of my good friend Ryan , a professional ski patroller at Fernie Alpine Resort .

Years ago, while skiing in Fernie, Ryan was buried in an avalanche for 26 minutes before being saved by an avalanche dog named Keno. Keno’s successful rescue was the first live recovery in Canadian history. This successful mission validated the Canadian Avalanche Resce Dog Association purpose, making all the dedication and hard work of all the members and supports worthwhile and proving rescue dogs save lives.

These episodes highlight the work by two or our current local avalanche dog teams, validated Veronika + her dog Skoki, and in-training Al + his dog Maggie.

These dogs and their handlers are some of the hardest working teams on the mountain. They train in whiteouts, in deep snow, in darkness before dawn and long after others have gone home. We’re so lucky to have them, and luckier still that these handlers commit their entire season - and their dogs - even their entire working careers to keeping us safe.

Pet First Aid day with bylaw enforcement and peace officers 🚨

These awesome teams are committed to community and animal safety. Their main role is pivotal for maintaining safety and harmony in the City of Calgary. They investigate complaints about bylaw violations and animal issues, collaborating with organizations and community members to care for animals efficiently.

Along with their new pet first aid certifications, they are trained in conflict resolution and mediation to help all residents and their pets in Calgary. Such an awesome group of people! Thankful for opportunities like this to help promote pet safety in our communities. Education is the bridge to safety!!

Thank you / Migwiitch 🧡🪶

I had the privilege of speaking at the inaugural Rez Dog Networking Conference this weekend in Winnipeg, Manitoba - situated on Treaty 1 territory, the homeland of the Red River Métis, and the ancestral lands of the Anishinabe (Ojibway), Ininiwak (Cree), Oji-Cree, Dene, and Dakota peoples.

The conference brought together front line workers, chief and council, animal advocates and veterinary professionals to collectively share and learn about the importance of humane care and management of dogs in First Nations communities in Manitoba and beyond.

The weekend provided us all with a deeper insight to the significant need for more support, education and outreach for remote communities that are currently struggling with the effects of dog overpopulation, colonialism and systemic barriers to access veterinary care. This conference was a cultural gathering of fancy dancers, drum circles, smudging and story telling from traditional knowledge keepers….all for the love of Rez dogs. 🥹

I commend Katie and all others who are doing this thankless work advocating and caring for the dogs in First Nations communities. Without their efforts, thousands of dogs would suffer. Take Bear (dog in first picture), who survived being shot in the face. His lower jaw was mostly gone and was surgically repaired by Katie’s team of dedicated veterinary staff. He is the bubbliest, happiest dog and now a symbol of the work being done to end dog shoots in Manitoba - a practice happening in many communities where aggressive dog packs are a safety concern for both people and dogs.

Rez dogs are the best! And I’m so happy to have been part of such an incredible gathering of compassionate animal guardians.

Scroll to the end to see some of the dogs that receive help from Katie and her team.

Hey instagram, it’s been a minute!

Fella and I have been hibernating from our social media lately… and it feels good to be back on the gram. I’m very excited to be hosting the final safety webinar of the 2024-2025 season tomorrow. Join us! Your dog is invited too! 🤗🏔️

BC AdventureSmart has been a leader in promoting safety in the outdoors for over two decades, and their online webinars bring targeted outreach in order to reduce the number and severity of Search and Rescue Incidents in Canada. I’m very stoked to be speaking tomorrow on the topic of dog safety in the outdoors.
