What is a tabby cat? 🐈 “Tabby” actually refers to a coat pattern found in many cat breeds. One thing tabby cats all have in common, is the classic “M” pattern marking on their foreheads!

There are some interesting legends surrounding the explanation of this marking: some say in Ancient Egypt where felines were highly revered as divine emissaries and protectors of the home, that the ‘M’ references the word mau which means cat. In Christian background, some say a cat snuggled in the manger with baby Jesus to help keep him warm and to say thank you, Mary petted the cat with gratitude and left an ‘M’ on its forehead.

Scientifically, the explanation for the letter 'M' is due to genetics. The tabby pattern comes from the expression of three types of genes that can be found in all domestic cats!🐾 🐈‍⬛

Are you planning on hiking outside of Regina with your dog this summer? In some areas of SK you may come across this plant out on the trails! Have you heard the expression “leaves of three, let it be?”…

One of the questions our Veterinarians have been asked, is whether or not poison ivy affects pets like it does humans? Thankfully poison ivy doesn’t often cause severe dermatitis or blisters in our canine family members, however the irritating oils from the plant can be transferred to people who have contact with their dog’s fur, mouths if they have been licking their paws, or floors they have walked on!

If your pet has wandered into an area of poison ivy, it’s best to wash them well afterwards (wearing gloves!) to remove as much of the oils as possible and be mindful about surfaces they have contact with for the first while after exposure to minimize transfer risk to human family members. 🌱 🐾
