Excalibur: Psych and Autism Service Dog In Training

Excalibur: Psych and Autism Service Dog In Training Page to follow along with Excalibur's (Cali's) training, from 8 weeks to adult! Please keep all com We are owner training with the help of a trainer.

Excalibur (Cali) was born on Boxing Day 2016, and came home Feb 22nd. He was born and raised from day 1 for the purpose of being my eventual service dog. He was the only one out of the litter that made the cut for what I was looking for. Fingers crossed he grows up to be everything I need and more! Note: We are located in Alberta, Canada. If you are an American viewing this page, please be aware t

Trip to Tim Horton's for training today. The booth was tight, Cali was certain he couldn't lay down, but eventually he managed. Part way through someone came by with a mop. Mopped riiiiight to the edge of the booth, only about a foot away from Cali's nose. I thought for sure he'd want to play with it, and try to bite it, I was ready to pull him back, but gave him a chance to make a good choice without instruction from me. The mop passed and I glanced under the table... His head was up, but he hadn't attempted to move. I made sure he got treats for that! And then he put his head back down, and relaxed again.

Pics from various angles of Cali wrapped around the center pole of the table. Good Shepherd! Good tucking.

One random Canadian Tire photo from 2 weeks ago, beside the Guide Dogs donation statue, and then photos of Cali's first city bus ride! We took a pic (with permission) of the bus driver too, but I decided not to share it.

Here is just a mass photo upload of all the pics I haven't posted recently... I am not going to explain them all right now, it was hard enough to just get over the hump and post them, but if you have a question about one or two, comment on it and I'll explain.

Excalibur and I went to Taboo Naughty but Nice Show this weekend. I go every year, but this is Cali's first! Got a picture (or two) with the fabulous Terri Stevens (and another rare photo of my face) This was after 4 hours, so Cali was done, so we were just heading home. His brain was broken and he was tired. So was I! But other than wanting to say hi to people when he wasn't supposed to, he did great until he got tired. So need to work on distractions more, but his heeling is improving! I have more pictures from recent outings to share, but haven't got around to posting yet.

Happy 1st Birthday to Cali! Also happens to fall on Boxing Day, and the day we did his Christmas gifts.

Harry Potter event this past weekend followed by bowling. We did not bowl, but went for the sounds and sights. He did pretty good at both events. There were some very narrow aisles in the store the event took place in, so he had to actually follow behind me. Breakables everywhere! Made me so nervous! Went up the stairs and I was making him practice his stair manners (staying beside me not running up) so when we got to the landing between the 2 sets of stairs he hit the brakes and we were stuck! Lol let him sit there for a minute then I put on a happy excited voice and charged up the next set of stairs and he was happy to go. I let him lead a little that time so it wouldn't hinder his confidence. Then we popped into an alcove/balcony for a photo, and totally spooked the people behind us. I had squeezed in behind them, and Cali is usually on my right, so he was next to the wall when I slipped by them. We were there for several seconds before the guy looked down and noticed Cali, and informed his female companion, who jumped a little from shock. Lol she was admiring him while we got the picture taken. Neither of them had noticed us move by them, and couldn't believe there was a giant shepherd sitting right behind them.
On the way back down the stairs he did awesome! No pausing, and stayed right beside me while I took the stairs slower than I normally would because I didn't want him to rush down them. He has a habit of leaping off the second last step that I'm trying to break, and he did great going slow.
Then we tried to go to eat. Oh boy! He would not go under the table, and he wouldn't settle! Puppy tantrum! So we ordered our Slytherin Sandwiches to go (they were great!) and waited for them to be brought out.... And of course during that time he settled down just fine! Typical!

Then it was home for a 2 hour break before we went off to bowling. Again it took him a bit to settle at the table at the bowling alley. He did his under good to start, but then he backed out of it and didn't want to do it again. He decided to lay in the space between my chair, mom's chair, and the aisle. Once he settled again, he was great! Kids running past his head (I was watching closely, making sure he wasn't in the way) loud music and bowling sounds, etc... The only person he reached his nose out into the aisle to sniff was my mom when she walked by. So his positioning left some to be desired but I'll settle for him calming down and relaxing at a table quickly first. Then we can work on the proper position to be calm in. One thing at a time! Not bad for a week shy of 10 months though!

So I had to get my phone fixed a while back, and missed posting a few of our adventures. I do have pictures that I will post eventually.

But for now, we attended my 10 year high school reunion tonight! Cali stayed for 2 hours and then my mom picked him up. Then she brought him back when I was ready to go. Here's some pics of him under the table.

Cali came to my blood work appointment this weekend. The second I sat in the chair he wanted to do an "under" but there was a partial wall in the way (I'd planned on him sitting or laying in the gap between my chair and my moms) so he settled for a partial "under" under my legs instead. I was shocked he even tried because we hadn't trained for it in months! Once he was too big for our chairs at home I stopped trying, but he remembered! Not great pics because it was hard to get them without him moving. But I love that "under" is one of his favourite things!
The only issue he had was when I left him with my mom while I went to the bathroom. I didn't think I could juggle him as we've only done mock practices in washrooms thus far. So he cried very briefly when I first went out of sight, but then he was quiet! So proud of my boy! Such a good boy!

This is a picture from last weekend that I didn't share yet. It's from Centrefest. Cali did amazing. He didn't even blink at the giant dino. I expected him to spook a little as it moved beside us but nope. Didn't give it a second glance. The guy was very impressed with him since he's still in training and only 7 months old. So proud of him! He's going to be amazing for me when he's fully trained.
