Today is the day! On the road to the Stony Plain Fall Tack sale with our huge selection of DSH Tack Supplies and Leathercraft, and some used tack and show clothes! Come see us 10am to 2pm at the top of the ramp/stairs between the 2 rooms!

A selection of items on blowout sale - remaining working one ear headstalls, remaining spur straps, remaining pancake knife sheaths, mini wallets, and remaining back cinch BILLET pouches and bottle holders - while supplies last. Making room for new designs and sizes!

Then everything from our heavy working curb/chin straps, bit guards, hoof pick holders, to our saddle can coozies, other pouches and bottle holders (universal attachment), sidepull attachments in assorted sizes, large selection of assorted tooled/show and working headstalls from quick change, browband, one and 2 ear (with or without throatlatch), to a few tack SETS, and we will have remaining stock of MINI headstalls with us as well, a couple award buckle holders/wild rag holders, and more! Help us make room for a TON of new designs we want to launch over winter for spring, as well as room for new products. From traditional browns, tans, black or mahogany, to multi tone "traditional" colours, to pinks, blues, purples, reds and more!

Smoke has been working on getting some trot miles under those feet, and building some fitness and stamina so that we can start working on some more advanced work, as well as some softening exercises both on the ground and under saddle to improve her body control so that we can ride around a bit less like a chunky pony. ;) I mean that in the most loving way Smoke. She has been lovely to work with so far. But, she has tons of potential and the natural progression of under saddle training is to move on to adding manuevers, obstacles, more miles and other skills as she builds the fitness to be able to handle it all.

Like Flame, she was here for her initial halter training and handling in May this year, arriving as an unhandled 3yr old. If you go back through her videos, you will see those first few rides a bit tense, "butt scooting" type spooks, to now. Though this video doesn't show it all - she is walk/trot, stop, back up, turn on the forehand both directions, introduced and slowly advancing the turn on the haunches as we unlock those shoulders a bit more, does the doubling exercise at a walk and trot into the fence, serpentines, figure 8s, and has no problem with bridges or things bumping her (we accidently bumped the panels the other day during a trot/serpentine exercise when she didn't quite want to stay soft through that turn). Stands very nice for tacking up, untacking, mounting, bridling and unbridling, and ties while I work other horses. Now we just need some more stamina and fitness while we work on adding other skills and more obstacles and exposure.

Flame's weekly update Part 2. Flame did it! 🥳🥳

Flame made it through a short ride, with a leg on each side, softly, and relatively relaxed. You can see her drop her head a few times and sigh, letting some of that tension go and relax into the moment. Even with me moving the reins, scratching her, ocassionally shifting in the saddle, moving my legs and stirrups, rocking the saddle. She was able to then flex and step off quietly both directions and though there was a couple nervous steps, trusted me to keep her safe, and was able to let that worry go pretty quick! For Flame, this is HUGE, even if the video doesn't seem like we did much. We did get "stuck" in the corner, but as long as she was staying relaxed, if that was where she was comfortable, I was ok with it for today. We made it through a session without a single bolt, anxiety attack or other issues we have been helping Flame through. 🥳🥳 We can keep building on that and fingers crossed we can keep moving forward now that she is finally starting to settle to the idea that having someone on her back isn't the end of her existance. It took her a bit to realize that I only have the best intensions being up there, and certainly don't have claws or teeth she has to worry about!

We are in the big shelter in this video just to get out of the relentless, never ending winds we seem to be having every single day this fall. Pony size for the win. ;)

Part 1 of Flame's update for this week, showing some of the other things we were doing to build her confidence with things above her, things moving above her, things touching her, and so on. Flame had her initial halter training and handling in May with us for 30 days, then went home and returned a couple months ago to begin under saddle and we have been working through a slew of anxiety with her, no fault of anyone's, just the type of mare she is. We are making progress, it is just slower. But there is nothing wrong with that. It means developing those tools in her to relax, rather than just pushing her through things. A horse cannot learn when they are ALWAYS tense, anxious, scared and bracing. That foundation cannot properly "stick". A horse that can relax, can learn. As the saying goes, when you train by force and fear, there will always be something at some point they fear more than you. We do things differently around here. We build connection, trust, relaxation and confidence. It might take a tad longer, but the HORSE benefits from it more. It is us humans that put the timeline on things, not the horse. Flame's solution to a lot of things has been to bolt, and blindly run. She doesn't pay attention when she gets in that state, the legs just go. That isn't a safe situation for her, myself, her future riders, nobody. It is much better for FLAME for us to take our time, develop those different stages and help her learn.

You'll see that hard work starting to pay off by watching her body posture begin to finally relax, and watching her softly respond to the halter and my hand even when she gets a bit nervous. It has been a bit of a long road with this little pony mare, but part 2 will show you where that road has gotten to! She is starting to trust the process, gain confidence, and things above her doesn't mean the end of times.

It was quite a sunset last night as we finished up with the yearling colts and some chores. Didn't get in for dinner until 9pm. Between horses and prep for the upcoming trade show/tack sale tomorrow, things have been hectic!

Today for the ponies was a day of patience, exposure, keeping our cool, relaxing despite "environmental stimuli" and so many other important things for calm, relaxed, working ponies! Also a good day for us trainers to remember to practice those skills too.

The high winds today come as no surprise, but on top of that, we have leaves swirling and blowing all over, in the big shelter has the tin roof making all sorts of noise (that was fun), and the big rig is back in the south field next to us breaking up the ground again and boy does that disc make some fun, but scary (in pony opinion) sounds when it comes clanging by. Both ponies were a bit "kite" ish today, but both were able to work through a bunch of it, softening up and letting some of that tension and anxiety while we "install the tools" that will help them in the future to be able to transition back to their owners under saddle, and their owners be able to bring those brains "back" online, and keep everything cool and collected, even when things out of our control happen. You can't control every little thing in a horse's life, no matter how much you prepare. Doing so only hinders their education. What you CAN do, is help them learn to release all that, relax, and keep their focus engaged in the session, no matter what is happening around them, and be able to bring that focus and relaxation back if they get worried, spooked or otherwise distracted. While one was working, the other stood tied quite nicely despite everything going on around them which is fantastic too!

BOTH of them dropped together for a dramatic, after "class" roll in the dirt, full of grunts and really working that dirt in good for evening grooms, and tomorrow's sessions.
